Super Committee Republicans Get Earful Over Loyalty To Grover Norquist

While Super Committee Democrats are pressed to accept unpopular, and illiberal proposals like raising the Medicare eligibility age to 67 over several years, Republicans are under increasing pressure to cut Grover Norquist loose.

....................

Yesterday, at a public hearing, those six Republicans got an earful from one of their former colleagues — retired Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY).

"Just a quick note about Grover Norquist," Simpson testified. "If Grover Norquist is the now the most powerful man in America, he should run for president. There's no question about his power. And let me tell you, he has people in thrall. That's a terrible phrase. Lincoln used it. I means that your mind has been captured. You're in bondage with a soul."

................

Simpson went on: "So here he is. I asked him. He said, 'My hero is Ronald Reagan.' I said, 'Well, he raised taxes 11 times in his eight years.' And he said, 'I know. I didn't like that at all.' I said, 'Well, he did it. Why do you suppose?' He said, 'I don't know. Very disappointing.' I said, 'He probably did it to make the country run, another sick idea.'"

1. Etymological note: "Thrall" originally meant "slave."
"Servant" in the sense of a person bound to servitude, and not a free person.

2. I hope they listen, but it's doubtful. They are totally brainwashed...
and need to be deprogrammed.

Compared to Simpson, Norquist is still an EYP...wet behind the ears and sold on himself. Truth be known, he either has something on each that have signed the pledge or has enough power to do them in if they don't string along with him. What other man has ever had that much of a hold on such a large group?

I find that very strange.

9. RUSH LIMBAUGH!
I have never know of person who US Congressmen & US Senators must apologize to...Remember when Obama first took office & Eric Cantor went on a "Listening Tour"?? Rush Limbaugh attacked them & they STOPPED after one session listening to people...Then the Tea Party started!

13. That's right. I try not to think of Rush...he is in a blank cell of my brain.

Same thing. He has to have something on these people to have any control. God knows that people with any intelligence don't listen to him, so WHY are they so afraid of him?

I'd thank you for reminding me, but I never want to be reminded of Rush. He makes me squirm with nasty thoughts of worms and snakes and blubber.

4. People like fuckwit Grover Nordquist...
...only have the power that our spineless representatives give to him. Tell him
to take a hike! Geez...our representatives (who are supposed to represent the people, not
some radical, pro-business Fascist) really are a bunch of wussies aren't they?

OH dear!! I can't say no to Grover! He won't like me! He'll be angry at me and he'll
make the CEO of Home Depot hate me! I won't be able to sit at the lunch table with the
other multi-millionaires and corporate leaders! Waaaaaa!

Sell outs and complete cowards.

5. I think it's more then that
I believe he has something on all those that have signed his pledge...whether it's knowing where all the skeletons are buried, or just givning them money that can't be traced... and the money is probably coming from people like the Koch Brothers and other corporation heads.

Maybe 8 hours at Gitmo, and Grover will sing like a canary...just saying.:D

10. Blame the American People
The Repukes found a way to win elections and it works. All they need to do is say; "cut taxes and cut regulations" and the electorate becomes in a "thrall".

Our parents were right, you get what you pay for. It's no wonder America is falling apart.

12. Glad Alan Simpson tore them a new one.
I certainly don't agree with him on many things, but he does belong to another era in the Republican Party. I remember Sarah Brady wrote in her memoir that while then-Congressman Dick Cheney gave her the cold shoulder, Simpson was always willing to keep the lines of communication open and explain his position, even if it didn't match hers.
