Italian hostage release hope fades

Italian hostage release hope fades

Thursday 22 April 2004, 15:05 Makka Time, 12:05 GMT

One of the four Italian security workers has already been killed

Hopes for the imminent release of three Italian security workers kidnapped in Iraq have begun to fade.

With no hostage release on Thursday, Rome has tried to stamp out rumours it had paid a €5 million ransom to have them freed.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Wednesday a ransom "hasn't even been talked about".

But speculation about the hostage situation has grown after he admitted "there has been a delay" in their release.

1. Call them by what they are. I do hate to see all these men killed
These men do know what they are in for and they are a gun for hire, I still do not wish them killed but they are not making pasta sauce in the back room. They are shooting at people.
