Nicaragua only to return troops to Iraq under U.N.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, April 21 (Reuters) - Nicaragua, which cited lack of funds when it pulled troops out of the increasingly violent conflict in Iraq, said on Wednesday it would only send them back as part of a U.N. peace mission.

Nicaragua's 115 military doctors, minesweepers and special forces came home in February as part of a rotation, but the government has not sent fresh troops due to lack of cash.

Sending more troops "is not totally off the agenda," said Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry. "Nicaragua is willing to send (troops) under the auspices of the U.N., as blue berets," he told Reuters.

The United Nations would cover the costs of sending the troops as part of a peacekeeping mission, he said. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has ruled out sending U.N. peacekeepers to Iraq at this time.

1. Spain, Honduras, Dominican Republic, now Nicaragua!
Who's next? Do I hear Poland?

I want to hear Dumbya say, "It's not the U.S. forces, it's the Coalition!" one more time.

2. Why would Nicaragua want to be there
in the first place helping out the US in it's invasion and occupation after all that Reagan and Bush 1 did to their democratically elected govt back in the 80's

3. I'm sure both Nicaragua and Honduras were just thrilled...
...at the choice of John Negroponte as the new Proconsul in Iraq as well.

Isn't he still persona non grata in Honduras? IIRC, there are several Central American countries he isn't welcome in anymore.
