LA protesters get official support from city
Source: AP

The five-day old campout demonstration outside Los Angeles City Hall to protest Wall Street greed is getting official thumbs up from the city.

City News Service says the office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa distributed 100 rain ponchos to the demonstrators on Wednesday while seven of the 15 councilmembers voted in favor of a resolution in support of the Occupy LA protest.

The resolution, which is slated for a final vote next week, called the protest "a peaceful and vibrant exercise in First Amendment rights."

As part of the resolution, the council will vote later this month on a measure that would require the city to divest from financial institutions that have not cooperated with measures to prevent foreclosures.

11. This is not a reason to celebrate
There is always the danger of such protests being co-opted by more organized, moneyed forces. This was a smart move. In a way it makes the protesters think that if the government supports them, they don't need to make such a statement and discourages a growing force or at least slows down the momentum. Even though LA's city council is supporting some action against the banks, it will do little to change the fairness of the system. But I hope I'm wrong.

14. Its a fine line, isnt it
On the one hand, support is to be encouraged. On the other hand, being coopted is not acceptable. So lets walk this line together.

22. That and
Just about every other movement through history. At some point they all get coopted and corrupted. But it seems to me that it happens a little quicker these days, as just about everything seems to move quicker in modern times.

23. Villaraigosa is going out on a limb here.
Do you think the Chamber of Commerce in LA will be happy with what he's doing? Or the LAPD, for that matter?
