One soldier dies of injuries in Mosul attack (Northern Iraq 4/20)
Wednesday, April 21,2004,8:31 AM

PORTLAND (AP) -- A National Guard solider from Maine was killed and three others were wounded Tuesday when their convoy was attacked in northern Iraq.

The Portland Press Herald has a reporter and photographer embedded with the 133rd Engineering Battalion. They say one member of the unit was killed, one was seriously injured and two had minor injuries.

A fifth soldier who was not assigned to the battalion was also wounded in the attack.

Maine National Guard Maj. Peter Rogers says members of the battalion were outside Mosul when their convoy was attacked at 9 a.m. Iraqi time. He said soldiers fought back and "neutralized" the enemy.

The last one reported brought the total to 701, but the total now is 708 I believe. Where did those last seven come from?

4. Are these the guys who were supposed to be home?
A group of Maine soldiers already had their things packed and were ready to fly home, when they got word their tours were extended yet again. It would be so sad if this guy was one of them.

8. I'm pretty sure this group just got there
This isn't the group whose tour was extended.

Sad in any case.

6. That's my husband's brother's battallion
His wife called last night to tell us that he is okay. I feel so bad for the families of the other soldiers. A lot of these guys and gals are just kids.

My brother-in-law has only been in Iraq about a month and their base has been under constant attack. My husband can't bear to watch the news on TV. He only reads about it online.

When will this madness end?

11. Names released
I got this in an email news update so there's no link yet that I know of.

Wednesday,April21,2004,2:49 PM
AUGUSTA (AP) -- The governor' office has released the names of the victims of an ambush in Iraq on members of the Maine National Guard.

The governor's office said Spc. Christopher D. Gelineau of Portland was killed in Tuesday's attack in northern Iraq upon members of the 133rd Engineering Battalion.

The governor's office identified the injured soldiers as Spc. Dwight Emery Nickles of Union, Spc. Craig Ardry of Pittsfield and Spc. Sok San Pao of Portland. All are recovering.

Baldacci said that Gelineau "paid the highest price for the freedoms we cherish in this country."

The battalion was ambushed when a roadside bomb was detonated next to the convoy's lead Humvee. Anti-American insurgents then opened fire on the soldiers, who returned fire and killed or seriously wounded several of the attackers.

There are more than 500 soldiers in the 133rd, which has its headquarters in Gardiner and arrived in Iraq in March.

Keri Frank(C), wife of slain U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Phillip Frank, cries while a Marine Honor Guard folds the American Flag during a graveside ceremony for her husband at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois, April 17, 2004. U.S. troops are dying in higher numbers in Iraq (news - web sites) this month than at any time during the war, with polls showing rising unease among Americans over the mounting death toll and doubts about the conflict's merits. 19. According to the DoD, this Mosul death will not be in the total count
The Mosul death (Christopher D. Gelineau, 23) does not count since he did not immediately die, but died of his wounds a little bit later. So since he did not die at the scene, he is not to included in the count which remains at 707.

21. That is total bullshit!
The DoD...not your post.

The local paper today is full of sotries about this young man and his unit. If this wasn't a combat death what the hell was it.

THis pisses me off like nothing has lately. I'm absolutely apalled!!!

23. Thank you.
I look at all the young faces, and I look at their loved ones' tear stained faces, and I break down and cry, too. I have a soon to be 18 year old grandson. I do not want to see his picture among the dead.
There are no flames of hell hot enough for what the awol chimp has done to us, and to the world.

I believe we should see pictures of the ones who sacrified their lives for what is nothing less than an illegal invasion. Too many lives have already been ruined. We need to bring the troops home now.
