Obama tells blacks to 'stop complainin' and fight

By MARK S. SMITH

Associated Press

In a fiery summons to an important voting block, President Barack Obama told blacks on Saturday to quit crying and complaining and "put on your marching shoes" to follow him into battle for jobs and opportunity.

And though he didn't say it directly, for a second term, too.

Obama's speech to the annual awards dinner of the Congressional Black Caucus was his answer to increasingly vocal griping from black leaders that he's been giving away too much in talks with Republicans - and not doing enough to fight black unemployment, which is nearly double the national average at 16.7 percent.

"It gets folks discouraged. I know. I listen to some of y'all," Obama told an audience of some 3,000 in a darkened Washington convention center.

1. A full belly and a job
would go a long way to motivate anyone to "fight".

3. Black folks have been fighting without a full belly or a job for years and years....
Black folks have lived the fact that nothing comes easy,
that every day is a struggle for many.
Doesn't mean anyone waits to have what it takes to be comfy to start fighting.....
Only those who accept being losers do that.

2. I just watched the speech......“the future rewards those who press on … i’m going to press on”
“The future rewards those who press on. With patient and firm determination we will press on. I don’t know about you CBC, but the future rewards those who press on. With patient and firm determination, I’m going to press on for jobs. I’m going to press on for equality. I’m going to press on for the sake of our children. I’m going to press on for the sake of all those families who are struggling right now. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain. I’m going to press on. I expect all of you to march with me, and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes, shake it off, stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying, we are going to press on, we’ve got work to do.”

All I can say is folks got fired up...

104. Can you even IMAGINE
the uproar if he had actually gone to Wisconsin and put all of the focus on HIMSELF instead of the protesters keeping it where is should have been, - on THEM?

I don't understand why so many just don't get that, if the president had gone there, wearing his "comfortable shoes, and tried to join a picket line, the protests would not have been nearly as successful, because the MSM would have stopped focusing on why the protests were happening in the first place, and switched to some kind of invented negative focus on his visit.

Not to mention that the majority of Wisconsin labor leaders were pleased with his statements, and found them very helpful.

The people who claim Obama has done nothing for unions tend to be uninformed and not supportive of unions themselves.

Certainly other unions are questioning their support for Obama --

And over more than 40 years of unions supporting and financing the Dem Party

they have only seen their numbers dwindle --

What the figure now -- 7% -- 9% ... ?

We all know the definition of doing the same thing and expecting different results --

When unions support Obama, they are either stupid, weak, or their leadership is corrupt, right?

Wholly appropriate to continue this line of thinking in a thread largely about race, eh? Embarrasingly appropriate.

191. Again, those are YOUR comments -- not mine ---
Every union has suffered a loss of members -- the attacks on unions have been

going on over 40 and more years now -- and Obama's comments may be helpful to

WI -- glad for that! -- but his attacks on public education, teachers and their

unions aren't.

I don't see that the thread is about "race" -- imo, it's about supporting the liberal

black caucus --

Some seem to be suggesting that leaving the "g" off of certain words or reporting that

is "racist" -- however, that's simply more nonsense -- because it's something often

done by others, as well, for emphasis -- and often by artists.

Obama is out of sync with liberals -- no matter their color -- and that's the message.

and the attack on public education by Obama/Duncan/Rahm -- across the nation --

orchestrated attacks on teachers and their unions --

189. Have you seen a dismissal
from me of the criticism? I have not stated that those criticism doesn't make any sense "considering Obama's record".

The original post I made in this thread was critical of the notion that the president of the United States could actually go to a state and march with protesters, and not do more harm than good by his very presence. Even the head of the Union involved acknowledged that, and expressed gratitude for the statements the president had made.

I guess that means he doesn't know what he is doing, though...huh?

194. Thank you -- and I think ....
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 09:13 PM by defendandprotect
that's a post which can lead us to a better understanding of what we are BOTH

saying --

From my point of view, this isn't about "racism" this is about more of Obama

attacking liberals because the black Causus is pretty much the most liberal

part of Congress.

Therefore, when you posted along these lines ...

The original post I made in this thread was critical of the notion that the president of the United States could actually go to a state and march with protesters, and not do more harm than good by his very presence. Even the head of the Union involved acknowledged that, and expressed gratitude for the statements the president had made.

I was NOT addressing his "physical presence" -- what I was questioning was his spiritual

presence and spiritual motivation given his record re unions.

And, on the contrary, I think we should all keep in mind that Obama knows very well what he

is doing -- !!! Little happens by accident -- !!

nothing to do with anything. Obama is long past the advance on his first book, which he got when he was quite young.

Don't know why that was hard to understand.

AAVE is largely "Southern" (not "Appalachian"), but is still distinctive. ("AAVE" = African-American Vernacular English)

In fact, it's been increasingly not like mainstream American English, and the rate of divergence has picked up in the last 40-50 years.

What is it about this effort to dampen Obama's support
day in, day out, like a fucking drum beat?

I understand you want him to lose,

It will just hurt them in the process.....

20. Here we are aforded to have our own and differing opinions
The President speaks of fighting. He says these words and when it comes to sit down at the table he throws the fight out the window.
Why is that??
I have not seen him fight for me...... for the things I feel are important.
If it takes an angry black man to move this country forward then let's go........
You may say that is not his style then he has no business to tell others how to fight.
He promised on the campaign trial many things ....... he has come through on many but not the ones that define this country.
He lets torturers go free, he lets fraudulent bankers go free, he lets people lose their homes through fraud, he promised transparency in government but has shut the doors, he promised a better day and not fought for that. He starts more wars.

When there are people that state for the record that they want to destroy you, you do not day after day offer your hand so they try to gnaw it off. You fight back in the same way. Where is that man??

In my opinion there are more terrorists in the republican party, in Congress, in the states than there are in the rest of the world. These people are out to destroy this country and he does not see that. They are more of a threat to this country than the terrorists abroad. If he would redefine foreign policy and stop trying to change the world to the American view we would create less foreign terrorists.

I will vote for the office, but if he continues as he has the first 2 1/2 years the vote will be for the office and not the man.

67. If he fails, you and I lose, and the country slides farther down the slope
The President told us to hold his feet to the fire, to hold him accountable.
It is our duty to call out politicians when we see them doing something we do not like.
Be they democrats or republicans.
I am in a weekly fight with my republican rep to show me the facts that he bases his opinions on.

When I see this president doing things that I feel are hurting this country should I keep my mouth shut so I do not upset him??

People talk to me and say they worry about SS, jobs, and seeing jobs more out of this country.
I see this President playing around with SS by asking for a reduction in payroll withholdings, asking for three free trade agreements.
I do not see how these two things help pull this country forward. I wait for someone to tell me the facts in how these things help this country. I see funds coming out of the general fund to pay into SS to make up the shortfall. This adds to the debt and becomes something the republicans can attack. I see the free trade agreements adding to the loss of jobs. Panama becomes a safe tax haven for the rich. They have very lax laws there in regards to that. How long before corporations start moving to these countries. What do we have to sell to them?? Show me how these will work for this country.

I do not see this country moving forward at this time. Reagan asked if we were better off now. I know I am not and I look around and listen that many others feel the same way.

As you say constant negativity doesn't win elections. I would also say rolling over and not really fighting does not move this country forward. I would like to see this president come out fighting everyday, point out the crimes of the republicans and lose than seeing him let the republicans set the agenda.

But he didn't say put your foot up his ass and keep it there so that he can't walk.

He didn't say that.

He also didn't say blame him for everything while sitting on your ass doing nothing.

as for this statement of yours:

I see funds coming out of the general fund to pay into SS to make up the shortfall. This adds to the debt and becomes something the republicans can attack.

When did you start giving a fuck what Republicans will attack? Hell, they attack everything! So why worry now, all of the sudden. I thought that's what people were pissed with the President for...cause he seemed so concerned about what Republicans will vote for when he needs a majority to pass anything?

And in terms of Trade agreements, have you actually read the ones being negotiated now....?
Just curious.

How do you know when I started being worried about SS??

If my foot up his ass, according to you, either bothers him or he does not feel it.
If it bothers him maybe he will turn around and ask why it is there.......

100. How has he not come through on
"things that define this country"? We have the first healthcare reform since Truman, we are on our way out of two wars, he has not started a new war - he helped in a NATO attempt to protect people fighting for their own freedom - had we (with NATO) done a similar thing in Rwanda, how many deaths would have been prevented??, we no longer have Don't Ask Don't Tell, he prevented a total financial meltdown, he saved a part of the US auto industry and with it some 300,000(?) jobs, he has been trying to close Guantanamo and we no longer torture as official policy, he captured the person responsible for 9/11, he passed the equal pay for equal work law and more!! But, of course, it isn't enough because you can always come up with a checklist of more that needs to happen.
Are you out there advocating for the things you want to see happen? The government responds to the loudest voices - witness the Tea Party...One person, no matter who they were was never going to fix a long history of wrongs in 4 years. The amount that Pres. Obama has accomplished with the lead weight of congress tied around his ankle is nothing short of amazing!

I agree with him 100% - Stop whining and get out and do something!! It's not up to one person to define a country - it never has been.

took office?" Most voters are not fighting (most America has been at the mall). Most voters are not in Gitmo. Most voters haven't seen any health care improvement and I haven't found a voter yet that blamed just one individual for 9-11 plus if you are referring to OBL, I saw a justified KIA but who was captured?

Compared to 19 Jan 2008, how are our retirement savings & home values?

It's the Economy - always has been and always will be. He know going in that if things got good, he'd take the credit and if things go bad, he gets the blame.

156. I think the meme about the left having nowhere else to go
Edited on Sun Sep-25-11 01:44 PM by No Elephants
is repeated more to convince us than to reflect what experts actually believe.

I think those who make a living from politics know better, be they mass media, or strategists or pundits know better.

It was once true that the right had to watch its right flank, but the left did not have to watch its left flank. The right has always had something brewing-Birchers, little splinter parties, like the Constitution Party, rogue Libertarians, etc. And now, the Teabaggers.

The Left did not have as much splintering. But that changed in 2000.

Besides, they know about a turnout problem in both the Coakley v. Brown election and the midterms. IOW, people don't always need a place to go. They can always stay home. IMO, that is THE worst thing a leftie voter can do, short of voting Republican, but people do it.

Ok, I would even understand that if he came out and said that he wanted to do those things but the conservatives wont let him.

And let's fight for Tim Geithner's right to give our tax dollars to Wall Street rich.

And let's fight for more air pollution and torture and genital inspections by government agents.

In other words, you are either for Obama or you are against him. Sounds familiar.

Nice job, Mr. President. You just told another 10,000 people to stay home. You aren't helping. You are just pouring gas on the fire.

But, if I look at his record in Illinois with the benefit of rueful hindsight, I think he was running for POTUS long before 2007.

families are now vastly less wealthy that whites. More than they've ever been.

A staggering percentage of black households have negative net worth. This recession/depression has hit minorities quite disproportionately.

We'll never have equality with so much wealth inequality.

People need good paying jobs, not pep talks. The only whining I've heard from people, black or white, is "Where are the fucking jobs?"

The new reality is that America is on a downslide. China is the place where things get made. And minorites are feeling the pinch more keenly than whites.

30. Settle down... I never said this was Obama's fault. But he's
not acknowledging (and no other politicians are, either) that we've lost a major chunk of our manufacturing base to China, and no one has any good ideas on how to get it back.

Pep talks won't accomplish fuck-all.

38. Not sure what there is to hope for...
Companies are sitting on record piles of cash, but refuse to hire anyone. Unless it's in China.

Banks have received trillion$ in bailouts, but won't loan to small businesses.

The hemmoraging of jobs to China not only continues unabated, but is accelerating.

CEOs still receiving record bonuses for dismantling companies.

We didn't roll back the Bush tax cuts when we controlled the Senate, House and Executivie branches.

There's hope, and then there's wishful thinking.

I still think Obama is a good and decent man, but our problems started in the eighties and there is no real fix. Monies interests are calling all the shots.

Again, the disparities did not begin with President Obama, nor will they probably end with him. I know it's popular around here to lay every problem at his feet. Maybe you only want to hear everything negative, and never what's positive. But most people want and need to hear "pep talks". Otherwise, they would feel no reason not to give up on anything. No one is blaming the victim -- I don't know where you got that from, unless you're referring to the OP, which is misleading. The president was talking to elected officials about not complaining and fighting along die him, which is what they should be doing.

it's the *wealth* disparity that is at record highs.

He said put on your marching shoes and don't give up. Keep working. "Stop complaining" meant that sitting around griping (like most in this thread) doesn't accomplish anything. You have to man/woman up and do something.

Your mind read "get over it."

And also ... you're saying the growing wealth disparity in this nation is Obama's fault? He did it in a mere two years? It's been going on for decades. And there was never any parity between black and white incomes in the country. Ever. That doesn't mean that some day, with work, it can't close.

What I know I gleaned from here:

http://www.ustr.gov/trade-agreements/free-trade-agreements

In general, they would allow US products to be imported duty-free into the respective markets. And vice-versa.

That's what free-trade agreements generally do.

While this might help with big-ticket items like machine tools and airframes, they will do nothing to return the tens of millions of jobs that have already been lost to China.

And while removal of tariffs might help US companies sell into these markets, the companies who will now have access will be manufacturing the goods to be exported in (where else) China.

Try this experiment - walk around your house, or any store for that matter, and see how many consumer items (I assume you don't own any CNC milling machines or 757 airframes) and see how many items you can find that are not manufactured in China.

I don't blame Obama for this. This started in the eighties. In a global economy, jobs will migrate to the lowest wage state, and for the last 30 years, this has been China.

Edited to add:

In the past three years I've been working as a design engineer in the clean energy sector. I spent one year at Evergreen Solar (they declared bankruptcy last month) and now Vestas, the Danish wind giant. My job at Evergreen went away when they hired two Chinese design engineers for about (combined) 1/2 of what I was earning.

Evergreen and two other major solar players have gone belly up this year. Not so much for lack of demand, but because they just cannot manufacture solar at a competitive cost, which is generally considered to be about $1/watt to achieve grid parity, or what you can produce from fosiil/nuclear/hydro etc. In addition, there is really no difference between the Chinese government and their industries. The Chinese gov'r gave $5b to their state-owned solar enterprise, Yingli. How can we compete with this kind of subzidization?

The solar business is over, and China has won. They manufacture panels by hand cheaper than we can using fully robotized factories. Wind is next. The Chinese own 95% of the world's supply of the rare earth Neodimuim, which is used to make the magnets used in generators. Now they are using this as a weapon against anyone with whom they have a beef. They shut off the Japanese last year over friction in the Sea of China.

The Chinese manipulate thier currency, pegging it to the dollar instead of letting it float according to currency market conditions. Several times Obama has asked them to please stop doing this. They blew him off. What did we do? Nothing.

Again, I'm not blaming Obama. The global economy is what it is. The war is over, and the Chinese won. China is now the lace where stuff is made. All kinds of stuff, with much more to come. The new Golden Gate bridge roadway is being made there and shipped over here by boat.

If you have a job that requires only electricity to run a computer, and internet access, it can and will be done in China.

Obama's response? Quit complaining.

That's just weak.

And I really like the guy.

My church has a summer internship program, and what they found was that a lot of the youth didn't know how to dress for an interview. So they started training workshops for interviewing skills. We also have an employment ministry for adults which helps with resume writing, interviewing and job search strategies.

Concrete solutions are what's needed. Anybody can take quotes out of context to try to kill black support of this president.

He is clueless about wall street crime, clueless about our wars and destructive energy policies, clueless about consequences of air pollution, clueless about the destruction caused by his embrace of trickle down economic measures like tax credits and tax cuts, clueless about outsourcing millions of jobs to India and China, clueless about the devastation created by turning huge policy decisions over to PhRMA, Exxon, BP, GE, Microsoft, BP.

90. You can tell by the overwhelming number of responses
about the CBC when it was thought that they did not support Pres. Obama (check out the recs!):

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4998329

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1757838

While one might notice the underwhelming number of responses about the CBC,
when they are expressing support for this President:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x780726

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x768021

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x780834

This one has predominantly Black DU posters posting,
and the rest of the DU folks, the big mouths usually found in most of the other
threads when they believed that Obama was being dogged by the CBC are nowhere to be found....
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x781080

but they are in THIS THREAD for sure!

In otherwords, no one gives a shit about the CBC, unless they've got something negative to say about Obama....than the threads get really long. It's so fucking transparent, till it almost ain't even funny!

I know what the CBC is and didn't have to come here to learn about it. One thing about you, you do condescension well. Unfortunately, it's not attractive.

You seem to feel the need to school black folks on who other black folks are. I don't give a rat's behind about the following the CBC has on DU. This isn't about the CBC. It's about folks around here feigning their concern about the plight of blacks when it suits their purpose. I find it interesting that every time someone black says something that can be construed as negative against the president, that person is elevated to deity. And they certainly won't let accuracy or truth stand in their way -- even if it means taking a quote out of context.

Do you have a relevant comment on the subject, or do you want to address some irrelevant crap like why I have less that 300 posts?

160. It's in everyone's best interests that as many people as possible can
participate in and share the vast wealth that this country can produce. When there's income and wealth inequality on the scale that we're seeing today that's largely correlated to race, then we have a situation that benefits no one. So yes, I am concerned about the 'plight of black folks'. Also Latino, Asian and Caucasion. No agenda here other than common sense and a desire to see this country not come apart along racial lines.

Does that sound suspicious and nefarious to you? If so, then I'm sorry.

We will never be a classless society, and I don't believe one is possible. But everyone should have access to education and business opportunities that the privileged have. If banks are hoarding cash instead of lending to small minority-owned businesses, and educational budgets are drying up, then we're going to have a lost generation, doomed to poverty and dependance on government for subsistance.

95. We have gotten to the point when Democrats aren't any more interest in "Truth"
as are Republicans.....

and I don't think they care anymore about people's future in a long run either....
just that Democrats "say" that they do.

In many ways the two extremes are very similar to each other.....
which is ironic, as most of them claim that they can't tell the difference
between the moderates in both parties.

148. And every Democrat should be telling Obama the same thing the CBC
finally started telling him the last couple months. It looks like they got his attention.

And I'd be amazed if the AA community supports him this time around --

I'd be shocked, in fact!!

108. ROFL -- Couldn't be Koch Bros. DLC that's trIed to "divide & conquer" . . . ?
Or the Third Way which now controls the Democratic Party -- ?

Or Democratic Party candidates who can't resist filling their pockets with corporate money

and who sell out the one time Dem Party principles -- ???

112. Need to build up the parties at the state level
and work on replacing the corrupt non-DLC, old-school "establishment" Dems. There will always be "Koch brothers", in whatever era you look at, like a Howard Hughes in the recent past who has been quoted as boasting of "buying any man in the world".

You just have to find ways around these people. They will always be there - they are a constant. And hurling insults and pointing out the latest low level players and wannabe "corporate" groups de jour is not effecting change or is practical. Creating a real progressive group who is able to operate in the mainstream (and no, that doesn't mean it has to be "centrist") should be the goal. But be aware that the majority of the populace is NOT going to go for extremism from either side.

119. Koch Bros. DLC turned it over to the Third Way which now controls the party ....

And after 20 plus years of Koch Bros. DLC and criminal corporations like Pfizer and

Chevron supporting Dem Party -- that's going to take one heck of a lot of "building up" --

That's more than two decades of Koch Bros. influencing the agenda and the candidats --

incouding presidential candidates --

And, Koch Bros. DLC aren't "old school/establishment Dems" -- they are CORPORATE/FASCISTS.

Also recall that these corporations were invited into the Democratic Party by Clinton and

Gore -- who sold the party -- and themselves to corporations --

ROFL --

Knowledge is power -- do you know how many Democrats didn't even know about Koch Bros.

control over the party? What the DLC actually was? What the Third Way is all about?

And now start to reflect on how many Dem candidates came on board with support from

Koch Bros ---

What we have to do is find out what might be left of the Democratic Party --

and how much additional damage Obama has done to the party given his throwing Social

Security and Medicare and Medicaid under the bus!

135. "Knowledge is power"
And thus you should know that this is nothing new. Before Gore and Clinton and the likes of Sam Nunn who in the late '80s helped to form the group who I hate and who you rail against, there were the likes of Strom Thurmond and the Dixicrats, a bunch of racist boll weevil ilk who called themselves Democrats, who eventually bolted for the repukes. They did as much or more damage to the party given they were the rural corporatists who oppressed millions off of their systems of share-cropping.

One can continue to believe and hurl right-wing talking points to justify their positions of trashing those who are trying to strategize around the high barriers like the DLC and the Teabaggers, or one can work behind the scenes to find their own solutions without all the hyperbole and insults.

163. Americans understood Southern racism in the Democratic Party ....
the Koch Bros/DLC/Third Way take over and infiltration of the party wasn't as

well known -- still isn't!

It was Segregation, Inc. which did the damage to AAs --

And let's also recall, that those racist influences were chased from the Dem Party

as President Kennedy -- and then LBJ -- stood up against those forces. The fight

actually came from the top!

The DLC is allegedly gone -- you now have the Third Way in control of the party --

And the T-baggers are funded and controlled by the same Koch Bros. who gave you the DLC --

And it's time for those whose only response is to alibi and run from citicism of the president

to stand up and actually respond to it rather than suggesting it is "trashing, hyperebole

and insults." Obama's record stands on it's own and it certainly isn't anything the

Democratic Party should be proud of --

And that is for voters to decide on for themselves -- and they have made themselves quite clear

-- not only in 2008 but in polls since then.

And if you try again to suggest that I am "hurling RW talking points" I will alert

on your post --

What you are hearing is directly from a Democratic Liberal who understands that Obama

engaging in back room deals with Big Pharma and the private Health Care Industry in his

betrayal of American voters on universal health care isn't democracy and all Democrats

should be standing against it --

As they should be standing against his putting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid

"on the table" --

And you've got things quite confused if you think the RW is fighting to save our safety nets

or campaigning for universal health care -- !!

158. The capitulator in chief wants Blacks to do his
fighting for him?

Since I was around in the 50's 60's 70's and since. It is my impression that the Blacks, women, minorities, unions have been fighting and dying for decades.

What we want to seem is Mister Preppie get down in the trenches and see what it is like to fight for peoples rights.

We know he has a sliver tongue, what we want and what this country needs is a fighter who is willing to get bloodied and put himself in harms way (not physically but politically, and historically) in the attempt.

Does he not realize that he is scorned almost as much by the people who voted for him as the people who voted, and will vote again, against him?
