8. My 14 yr old daughter's on a United flight right now. Stories like this are making me want to heave.
I also find these stories to be extremely distressing. My husband changed her flight to today (I had originally had her booked for tomorrow). He just didn't "remember" that it was 9/11.

I am literally sick to my stomach with fear as I wait her arrival after reading this story.

18. My thinking is that terrorists would be more likely to catch the US off guard and do something on an
unexpected day. Still, I know you must be very anxious, and will be glad to exhale when your daughter arrives safely.

6. Lol!
I'll bet my blood pressure has dropped 40 points while imagining these events occuring (fighter-escorted passenger jets landing, passengers detained and searched at airport checkpoints, terminals closed down for searhes, etc.), speeded up, with that Benny Hill music going on in the background........

Thanks for the laugh!

14. It's a freak show of weirdos (the usual airline passengers) and hair trigger TSA types...
Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 05:52 PM by SoapBox
I agree with the yawn.

It's 911, 911, 911, 911, 911, 911...and on and on.

Common sense goes out the window when the hyper and undereducated take control.

My personal biggest concern is, that these various stupid type situations, are distractions from REAL security issues that might arise. I have little faith in DHS and TSA...I think that they have slipped into being too BIG and are overly concerned with the show that they put on.

Oh and stupid shit like this at the airlines happens everyday...the masses just don't hear about it.

22. I got breaking news for you-
the 19 people who hi-jacked four airlines on 9-11-01---- are DEAD.

There are no more airline bombers, hijackers, or guys trying to kill a great number of Americans.

It's all just boogymen you are chasing. They do not exist.

But America is in a perpetual state of fear.

The bastards only win if you let them. Stop letting them.

26. The facts are the facts.
However, if on 9/10 they starting searching all passengers, had fighter jets scrambled, and insisted on a lot of limitations on carry-on luggage because * had some warning that AQ wanted to attack somewhere in America sometime "soon" after early August, people would have thought it all crazy and outrageous.

If it had started in August by the end of August there'd have been a lot of complaints and probably outbursts from people at the airport.

Until 9/11, then nobody would have ever uttered a peep. Retroactively. Except for the people saying that the 19 had been framed in a Zionist anti-Muslim plot.

It's always easy to make plans for the near future with at least a year's hindsight.

It was eerie though - the streets of Manhattan were quieter than anything I have ever seen before, and there was almost nobody in the Jetblue terminal at JFK, and there was almost no one when I got back to LAX.

40. James Fallows: Flying While Half-Arab (and Half-Jewish). This One Is Shocking.

Now, read this account from one of those three who escaped with the apparent good fortune of not being charged. Her name is Shoshana Hebshi, and she is an American citizen with a Saudi father and a Jewish mother. She is married and is herself a mother, and she lives in the Midwest. That's her picture, at right, from a column she did about her love of bicycles, two years ago while a graduate student in journalism at Iowa State.

To skip ahead to the punch line, on this flight she was sitting by chance in a row with two Indian-looking passengers, neither of whom knew the other or knew her. But collectively they aroused the suspicion of other passengers or crew, and when the plane landed, heavily armed troops stormed aboard, handcuffed the three of them, and took them off for extensive questioning. After which they were eventually released with "no charges filed." Which is fair enough, considering that like everyone else on the plane they were simply trying to travel from Denver to Detroit and had done absolutely nothing wrong except to have "suspicious" looks.

And, much later, after the authorities begin to establish that she is not a threat:

>>Again, I asked what was going on, and the said judging from their line of questioning that I could probably guess, but that someone on the plane had reported that the three of us in row 12 were conducting suspicious activity. What is the likelihood that two Indian men who didn't know each other and a dark-skinned woman of Arab/Jewish heritage would be on the same flight from Denver to Detroit? Was that suspicion enough? Even considering that we didn't say a word to each other until it became clear there were cops following our plane? Perhaps it was two Indian man going to the bathroom in succession?<<

Her account goes on, at quite some length. I think if you start reading you will continue. I should say that I cannot independently vouch for her version of events -- and it is so specific and detailed that I'm sure it will be challenged by the airline or police if it's inaccurate. But the worst thing about it is that it is so easy to believe. Compared with this, the Vance Gilbert "flying while black" case is nothing.

http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/09/flying-while-half-arab-and-half-jewish-this-one-is-shocking/244984/

Sounds like four brown people were guilty of happening to sit in the same row.
