Mississippi to vote on reversing abortion rights by redefining 'person'
Source: The Guardian

Mississippi voters will be allowed to vote on an initiative that seeks to reverse abortion rights by redefining the term "person" to apply at the moment of conception.

The state's supreme court refused to block the amendment, which will now appear on the general election ballot on 8 November. A majority of the justices said they could not rule on whether measures were constitutional until voters of the legislature had had a chance to pass them.

Civil rights campaigners criticised the court ruling and described the measure as "harmful to women".

Nsombi Lambright, executive director of the ACLU of Mississippi said: "We're disappointed with the ruling. A measure will be on the ballot that will allow the government to dictate what is a private matter that's best decided by a woman and her family, within the context of her faith. Mississippi voters should reject this intrusive and dangerous measure."

Meanwhile, the US constitution hasn't been clarified to prevent corporate personhood!

and if I could- I would write in "HELL FUCKING NO"

but, alas, I know that I will be outvoted by my slow speaking, ultra conservative, neighbors.

6. It is not a myster to the majority about what happens at conception...
its the other factos that could arise that may lead someone to decide to have an abortion. It is a private decision that should not be voted on.

7. Will they get to vote? Double the welfare? Can they sue/be sued?
Can they commit a crime - how about trespass? It sure will mess up a lot of wills/trusts/contracts and how old are they anyway? Are they 9 months old at birth (and would the same apply to all existing persons in Mississippi)? Will Mississippians be able to qualify for Social Security 9 months earlier? Can they drink/drive and marry and enter into contracts or join the military 9 months earlier than what is now the law? This will be interesting. How about child support and the right to find out who is one's real father/mother? Can/Must they agree/object to adoption? What if they want to be aborted? They will certainly be able to express an opinion or can they? Maybe they will sue to become wards of the court or seek a better family situation. Will children be a deduction at conception for tax purposes? Ah the car pool lane issue - one or two? Will the "person" be charged admission to Disneyland, to go on a bus/cruise/airplane? If there are equal rights/treatment under the law than this "person" is entitled to equal treatment and cannot get more/less rights than an older, breathing outside the womb person has otherwise it is second class citizenship. Will they need a passport to travel outside the U.S.? Is it a state issue? If there are people who speak with the dead, there will surely be those who can speak with the unborn and find out their needs/wants. I see a great future for lawyers/psychics in Mississippi. One would have to be out of his/her mind to be an obstetrician in Mississippi if this passes IMHO.

11. Such a relief!
If potential = completion, then I can now start taking cake batter up to my son's classroom and call it cupcakes. I can slap some raw steak on the countertop at 5pm and call it dinner. That'll sure save lots of time. And my neighbor had better be careful not to snatch up any of my acorns as he is raking... those are MY TREES, by golly! My son can now hand in a blank sheet of paper and call it his finished homework! He'll be thrilled.

Oh, and fuck the people behind this initiative in Mississippi, by the way.

16. Are Fetuses Dependents for Tax Purposes?
If a woman in MS gets pregnant after this passes, but before the end of the calendar year, will she be able to claim the fetus as a dependent? If so, I wonder how much tax revenue this will cost them?
