British Police Arrest 10 on Suspicion of Terror
British Police Arrest 10 on Suspicion of Terror
By ALAN COWELL

Published: April 20, 2004

LONDON, April 19 - For the second time in three weeks, hundreds of police officers were deployed in Britain on Monday in a major sweep of suspected terrorists. The police said nine men and one woman had been arrested.

The operation comes at a time of increasing concerns here. Senior security officials have warned in recent weeks that Britain faces the threat of a terrorist attack on the scale of the train bombings in Madrid on March 11. Britain is the largest non-American contributor of forces to the United States-led war in Iraq and has been closely identified with the campaign against terrorism.

The raids on Monday centered on the Manchester area in northwestern Britain, where the assistant chief constable, David Whatton, said 7 of the 10 suspects - all described as being of North African or Iraqi Kurdish descent - had been arrested under antiterrorism laws.

1. Britain faces threat of a terrorist attack on the scale of the Spain bomb
Oh No! Perhaps Britain should elect a new leader that will give the terrorists what they want so they don't get bombed. This latest example of Spain caving to terrorist demands could very well be a road map for all to follow if it stops the terror bombings. I noticed that Spain has not been bombed since they elected the leader the terrorists chose to win.

2. You'll be gone before I'm done responding, but what the hell?
Right. Give the terrorists what they want. In case you haven't been paying attention to international politics, the Spanish people were always against the Iraq war. Aznar's handpicked candidate might still have won if Aznar himself hadn't tried to blame the bombing on the ETA, then accuse his critics of being unpatriotic. Let's also not forget that "terrorism" isn't exactly something that can just be stamped out: the more you try to destroy it using blunt force, the more it spreads, like stepping in a puddle.

3. Very well put...
People forget that Aznar was well ahead in all polls even the day after the bombings. It wasn't until the Spanish got wind that something else was up that things started turning against the PP. If Aznar had been honest from the beginning, Rajoy would be Prime Minister right now.

4. another link: Ten arrested in alleged UK stadium terror plot
Police in the north of England have arrested 10 people on suspicion of terrorism, thereby reportedly foiling a suicide bomb attack aimed at a packed soccer stadium.

Greater Manchester Police said Monday the raids included searches of a number of buildings and businesses. The 10 were detained "on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism."

The Sun newspaper reported Tuesday that the suspects planned to set off bombs during a match between Manchester United and Liverpool this weekend -- one of the biggest games in the English soccer calendar.

The paper quoted an unnamed police source as saying the suspects had bought tickets for seats in the 67,000-capacity Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium.

6. If these people are found guilty
I'm very impressed with the police & security services in this country & I'm not quite cynical enough yet to think it might be a set up.

7. Only arrested so far, not charged, prosecuted or found anything
Most of the "terrorists" arrested or detained for questioning in the
last year have been released without charge. The arrests get bold,
dramatic headlines, full front page exposure and associated "terror"
articles in the rest of the tabloid (or broadsheet for that matter)
while the releases are very quiet, understated affairs.

"The power of accurate perception is commonly referred to as cynicism
by those who do not possess it." (George Bernard Shaw)
