Tony Blair is facing fresh questions over Iraq today after claims that
President George Bush offered him the chance to keep British troops out of the fighting.A new book by legendary Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward says the president made the last-minute offer for fear of Mr Blair’s government falling over the war.
Mr Woodward also claimed Britain was a key driving force behind the timing of the war, with President Bush determined to give Mr Blair every opportunity to seek the second United Nations resolution so important to him domestically.
The claims come as the
commander of British forces in Iraq warned coalition troops may have to stay there for 10 years. Brigadier Nick Carter said Western forces would be there for anything up to a decade. And a new poll shows support for the war is falling.
