WikiLeaks releases encrypted mystery file

By Agence France-Presse
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 -- 7:11 pm

WASHINGTON — WikiLeaks released a mysterious encrypted file on Wednesday after telling its followers on Twitter to stand by for "an important announcement."

WikiLeaks did not identify the contents of the 571 megabyte file and it could not be opened without a decryption key, which the anti-secrecy website said would be released "at the appropriate moment."

In July of last year, WikiLeaks posted what it called an "insurance file," which was also encrypted.

According to press reports, the 1.4-gigabyte file was intended for public release in the event of something untoward happening to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

4. Perhaps, this has something to do w/the Grand Jury in Alexandria, VA?

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if after dropping the Espionage Act case against the AIPAC defendants on the grounds that the Act wasn't intended to be used against non-gov't leakers, Holder proceeded to Indict Assange on the same flawed grounds.

The National Security State needs no legal logic or principles. It is it's own justification.

6. Global - Guardian journalist negligently disclosed Cablegate passwords
http://www.wikileaks.org/Guardian-journalist-negligently.html

1 September 2011

A Guardian journalist has negligently disclosed top secret WikiLeaks’ decryption passwords to hundreds of thousands of unredacted unpublished US diplomatic cables.

Knowledge of the Guardian disclosure has spread privately over several months but reached critical mass last week. The unpublished WikiLeaks’ material includes over 100,000 classified unredacted cables that were being analyzed, in parts, by over 50 media and human rights organizations from around the world.

For the past month WikiLeaks has been in the unenviable position of not being able to comment on what has happened, since to do so would be to draw attention to the decryption passwords in the Guardian book. Now that the connection has been made public by others we can explain what happened and what we intend to do.

WikiLeaks has commenced pre-litigation action against the Guardian and an individual in Germany who was distributing the Guardian passwords for personal gain.

COMPLETE STATEMENT AT LINK

9. Wikileaks is suing The Guardian over being wikileaked.
Regardless of where one's sympathies lie, the irony is simply sublime.

10. Wikileaks was trying to be responsible
by getting the messages redacted if they contained info that would cause someone's death. The Guardian (now that's irony) person who released it was playing havoc with people's lives and the Germany guy, just wanted to make money.

It's only ironic if you make a false equivalence.

"It's only unironic if you have attentional bias."

Or no sense of humor. :)

Open world. That's what they want. Right?

I know it's what I want...unless it's my information that's being leaked, of course. ;)

8. Why play games. If they have info they think should be public, make it public.
This reminds me of some kinda pr campaign for a new NIN album or something.

11. Yeah...I'm thinking that too.
If it should be public. Make it public. What's with the games?
