Mitsubishi Motors plans 4,500 job cuts as part of restructuring: report

Struggling automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is planning to cut 4,500 jobs, or 10 percent of its total workforce, as part of a restructuring plan to be revealed April 30, a report said.

Of the cuts, 1,000 will be in domestic operations, the top-selling Yomiuri Shimbun reported without citing its sources. Job cuts in Europe, the United States and Australia will total slightly more than 3,000.

After such reductions, the total number of Mitsubishi Motors employees will fall to about 40,000, down 45 percent from its 2000 level.

1. Not to offend those of you who may own a Mitsu, but it's their own
fault. For years now, they have been making sub-par vehicles. They look good, and perform well, but they don't last. I've lost count of the people I know who have had transmissions go out at 15,000, engines at 50,000, and on, and on.

Recognizing this, Mitsu recently came out with a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, albeit, to late to save their reputation. They're partially owned by Chrysler (Mitsu engines and trannys are in many Dodge/Chrysler vehicles, including their Dakota truck, and their vans, most of which have had reliability problems).

2. 2 engines and 3 transmissions - under 100,000 miles.
Yup.

3. Sorry to hear it. Unlike most other Japanese manufacturers,
Mitsu never seemed to learn decent manufacturing processes and metalurgy. Their stuff just wears out, in fact, about as bad as any vehicles made over the last 50 years, that I can think of. Shame too, because their basic designs are pretty good. Did you know they are an aircraft manufacturer too, like Saab. Knowing their reliability problems though, you couldn't get me in a Mitsu plane for a million!
