Poland planning pull-out of troops from Iraq

Poland is planning to withdraw its troops from Iraq in the coming months, dealing another blow to the US-led coalition forces there.

The revelation yesterday by a senior government adviser that Poland's 2,500 soldiers would leave Iraq comes just a day after the new Spanish Prime Minister, Mr José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, announced the pull-out of Spanish troops "as soon as possible".
....

A senior adviser to the Polish government confirmed to The Irish Times that Warsaw's decision had been influenced by the Spanish move. "Given the circumstances , we will probably diminish significantly the forces at the end of 2004," said Prof Tadeusz Iwinski, secretary of state for international affairs in the office of the prime minister.

Questioned further by The Irish Times, he said: "It is much easier to send troops in than to withdraw them, but we will probably do it at the end of 2004 or the start of 2005."

6. Oops
Guess they finally realized that the hand that feeds them is the Old Europe EU, not their new imperial friends over the Atlantic.

7. What really makes me puke ...
is hearing the Bush criminals say this is "giving in to the terrorists." We will hear it from now until the election - "everybody is going against Bush because they are afraid of the terrorists."
That's what repugs will say, overlooking the utter corruption and incompetence of the Bush administration.

8. Is the war in Iraq beginning to look like a Monty Python sketch?
An army of true-believer crusaders all marching triumphantly into battle only to turn tail as soon as they realize what they're really getting into.

12. This just in!!
The biggest weapon in the Iraqi rebels fighting strategy against the Poles were psychological warfare. The weapon was Polish jokes.
Iraqi rebel:"Hey Poles, do you know why you're battleships have glass bottoms?"
Polish foot soldier:"NO!!"
Iraqi rebel:"That way you can see the old Polish Navy!!"
Polish foot soldier:"You son of a bitch!!"

That's how the Iraqi's got into their heads.
(sarcasm off)

Sorry I couldn't resist:)

16. I think it's just getting too dangerous for them....
the cost outweighs the benefits for the Poles. This does not surprise me. Poland figures it's less costly to have the US pissed at them, than to have their electorate ready to pull the plug on them.

I read a while back that the Poles were promised all kinds of goodies once the country settled down (like oil revenues and I believe building contracts), but if they look around, it ain't happening anytime soon.

So -- Good-bye Yanks. Take care and watch your step.

20. Well Guys and Gals.....My wife is Polish.....
Want the background on this.....

Poland expected that once they were part of the European Union that they would become part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Pilot Program like most or all of the rest of the E.U. countries now are and have been for a while. This allows Polish citizens to visit friends and relatives in this country for ninety days with only a passport, just like England, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, etc...Although there are allot of illegal Poles working in this country, the Polish population of Chicago exceeds Warsaw. Many family ties and Poland has proved to be one of our best allies.

From the U.S. State Department.... NO DICE......

Not only would Poland not be part of the Visa Waiver Pilot program...
but the Bush Administration placed them on a list of countries not currently on the Visa Waiver Pilot program that would now be photographed and finger-printed when they enter this country.

The Polish President visited the U.S. for a high profile visit a few months ago....due to pressure from his own political party. He expressed his people's concern and on international television Bush stated of course he was serious about Poland's concerns because there are thousands of voting Polish American citizens in this country at which time the Polish President corrected him in English by saying ...."Millions Mr. President, Millions".

Bottom line the Shrub burns another bridge.....
