Luxury, horror lurk in Gadhafi family compound
Source: CNN

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Moammar Gadhafi told his people he lived modestly during his nearly 42-year rule over Libya, often sleeping in a Bedouin tent.

Even if that was true for the leader, it certainly wasn't for his sons.

At a seaside compound in western Tripoli, the Gadhafi boys enjoyed a decadent lifestyle that his people could only dream about, while perpetrating unspeakable horrors on the staff that served their every whim.

CNN visited the seaside homes Sunday.

1. What a horrifying story...
I hope the nanny gets the help she so urgently needs and deserves.

And I hope the woman who attacked her is brought to justice.

Her behavior is vile and reprehensible in the extreme.

Recommended.

3. Lovely people who did 'private concerts' for the Gadhafi clan
include Jay-Z, Nelly Furtado, Usher, Timberland and 50 Cent. They have thus far kept the stolen fees. Beyonce and Mariah Carey donated their Gadhafi fees to charities after they were found out.
Just so people know.

13. Exactly. I have been shocked by the posts from people here acting as though
Libyans were living large and life was peaches and cream under Gadhafi.

I guess if Obama must be criticized and blamed for every action under the sun, then portraying Gadhafi and his family as dictators who preyed on their people must be the first bit of truth to go.

14. good question. among others one might have about this video.
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 01:47 AM by indurancevile
like, since health care is free in libya, why does she need money to go to the hospital, & if she *does* need money to go, how did she go in the first place when she has no money?

and why would the wife insist she keep "working" {as a nanny} when she looks scary as all get out?

and the wife insisting that the nanny beat the child? and burning her when she wouldn't?

doesn't jibe with the arab child-rearing practices i'm familiar with, especially in the upper crust. indulgence more likely.

i guess we're just supposed to knee-jerk assume everyone related to ghaddafi is psychopathic.

here we are shown a video of a non-remarkable house of a wealthy political family, some bottles of booze in a banana box (a banana box? they store their expensive booze in chiquita/united fruit banana boxes?) we're told the house was the site of terrible "decadence" though there's no evidence whatsoever. the house itself is no more decadent than the houses of our own ruling class. less, actually, than many so far as i could see.

then we're shown a burn victim and told the story about the wife. maybe it's true, maybe not. but we have no way whatsoever of knowing.

Health care
Health services are free for all citizens. Primary health care is very well developed, and available all across the country. There are about 7,000 doctors, 1.3 per 1,000 inhabitants. Many doctors have been trained abroad, and overall Libyan doctors have good skills.
Libyan had in 2008 3.7 hospital beds per 1,000 inhabitants, representing a small reduction in the recent decade (3.9 in 2001). There are many medical clinics and small hospital all across the country, with two major hospitals in Tripoli and Benghazi.

A guard took her to the hospital.

I assume CNN didn't take her because you need a plastic surgery specialist to deal with the remnants of her scars.

I sure hope they capture this woman and put her in prison forever.

What make people like that so sadistic without compassion or empathy.

19. This story jives with many other accounts of modern day slaves -
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 10:22 AM by hedgehog
typically someone from South Asia or Africa who answers an ad for a nanny or housekeeper; often times a child or teenager. Horrific punishments for minor or imaginary offenses seems to be the norm. It raises the question about whether the benevolent Southern slaveholder ever existed outside myth.

20. The benevolent slave holder ALWAYS exists in the mind of the slave holder, never anywhere else
A couple just got busted not too far from me - here, United States, Pacific Northwest - for keeping an illegal housekeeper/slave for three years.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4969995

Slaveholders are the same everywhere. And the thing I found shocking about this example was that the couple had a social life, and careers, and presumably quite a number of other people knew about the situation and didn't report it. So it's not like they're a couple of bizarre creeps unlike everyone else, but more like they just happened to be the ones that got caught.

So if you're going to hate on them, hate on them all equally.

28. Exactly what is it you think a story is supposed to do?
Elicit no desired perception? Have no effect on behavior?

In a world where you are king, there are no novels, short stories, oral histories, myths, folklore, epic poems, plays, movies, or bedtime stories.

30. No, you're not.
You're either shockingly ignorant or just plain stupid. The Libyan people rose against the regime on behalf of Western oil companies? :eyes: And don't forget the initial reaction of the US was to not want to get involved, until Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron came out in support of the Libyan rebels and went to the UN to invoke "responsibility to protect" for the deployment of NATO forces.
