Mumbaikars exult at Hazare's success

MUMBAI: Hundreds of people danced, sang patriotic numbers and rejoiced from 6.45 pm onwards at Azad Maidan on Saturday as news filtered in that Parliament would be adopting a resolution incorporating anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare's demands.

As soon as India Against Corruption (IAC) representatives informed the 200 to 300 people gathered at the ground that Hazare's demands would be met, patriotic slogans like 'Bharat mata ki jai' rent the air. Whistles and yells of joy and victory rang out at the maidan that has been the epicentre of the support for Hazare in Mumbai.

Though rains may have kept people away from public celebrations, many Mumbaikars across the city braved Saturday's incessant rains to gather in small groups in temples or public places and flash the victory sign. "Anna has achieved what the people of the country wanted and he continues to remain safe and healthy," said Andheri businessman Rajeev Jain.

Pooja Pujari, an executive with a five-star hotel, said she was "thrilled by the victory of the people".

However, many at Azad Maidan cautioned that this was only a "partial victory" as the war against corruption had only begun. Ramesh Kode, 33, an IAC volunteer, said, "I'm still not satisfied. We want the Jan Lokpal bill to be tabled in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha."

And here, our leaders double down on every terrible idea. I wonder what the spark will be that ignites the people here.
