Hanabusa passes on Senate bid

Hawaii Rep. Colleen Hanabusa will seek reelection to her Honolulu-based House seat, passing on a taking a shot at the open seat Senate race to replace Daniel Akaka.

"After much thought and much reflection, I have determined that I can best serve Hawaii by seeking reelection for a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives," Hanabusa said in a statement early Wednesday morning.

Hanabusa said she believed a change in both House seats along with membership in the Senate "could seriously undermine our efforts to preserve such cherished programs as the East West Center and continue vital funding for the military in Hawaii, while threatening other federal support."

Two Democrats are already competing for Akaka's seat, including 2nd District Rep. Mazie Hirono and former Rep. Ed Case.
