Bachmann: If elected, gas prices would fall to less than $2 per gallon
Source: The Hill

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) vowed Tuesday that, in her presidency, gasoline prices would fall back to less than $2 per gallon.

Bachmann, speaking to a town-hall meeting in South Carolina, said she would pursue energy policies that send pump prices down to levels not seen since early 2009, at the thick of the U.S. recession.

“Under President Bachmann you will see gasoline come down below $2 per gallon again,” she said in Greenville. “That will happen.”

Bachmann and other GOP White House contenders are calling for much more aggressive U.S. oil drilling — her campaign backs drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and wider offshore production, alleging President Obama has placed too many restrictions on development. . .

I'm telling you now -- this campaign "promise" while logistically improbable to those in the know is going to appeal a whole hell of a lot to many people. If you think it won't, you're fooling yourselves. I'd caution that you focus on how to beat her rather than how to belittle her.

Part of "how to beat her" is to mock her when she's mockable, which is just about every day. Ridicule is a weapon they can't counter.

56. Good point, but also, missing the point.
Mocking a fringer like Bachmann is good politics, if it actually discredits her in the eyes of those who might otherwise vote for her. But it's chump politics if it causes progs to not take her seriously, and therefore, not be vigorous in learning how to defeat her.

I see way too much of the latter around the prog blogs. Case in point: November 2010.

If she gets elected the stock market will collapse---businesspeople know what someone like her will mean for the American economy. When the stock market collapses, oil prices usually shrink as a response to the potential of decreased demand. When nobody works, nobody buys gas and the price goes down.

So, she is right---but doesn't have a clue why gas prices would collapse. It isn't a vote of confidence in her policies, it's running for cover in fear of her policies.

36. There's only two ways to do that, in reality.
1] Change the infrastructure quickly by passing laws that make only electric cars legal (new builds).

2] Run the economy off a cliff so everyone is out of a job and demand for gas drops to a trickle.

I think she's only capable of one of those methods.

for Obama to achieve just this with our own massive reserves of natural gas.
It certainly isn't Bachmann's idea. Utilizing our own fuel resources would
pulverize our dependency on foreign oil, and drop the price of existing gas prices
probably to half.

Personally, I'd rather see the price of gas go up to encourage people to drive low emission, fuel efficient vehicles like the rest of the world; hitting them in their pocket book seems to be the only way to pry Americans from the Sherman tanks they insist they need to get to the grocery store in.

How does she figure more aggressive oil drilling is going to benefit the american people, when global corporations are doing the drilling and they put it on a global market? Does she think we're all clueless? The only way that works if an agreement is made with the oil companies where the US gets a percentage drilled. And I'm thinking she's too much of a deregulating, ayn randian corporate butt kisser for that to happen.

70. She is right but not for the reasons she gives. Remember right after the big financial meltdown in
2008 when gas prices fell below $2 in many parts of the country? That's because the economy was in such bad shape that demand for petroleum products nosedived and caused prices to plummet. If Bachmann gets elected, God forbid, we will have such a deep depression that it will make 2008 look like a picnic. And gas probably will be below $2 but it won't matter because our economy will have been destroyed.

Average price of gallon of gas in http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2008/12/gas-prices-4.html">December 2008: $1.61

Gee, what happened in between July and December of that year that made the price drop so much?! And Bachmann http://money.cnn.com/2011/08/18/news/economy/bachmann_gas_prices/index.htm?hpt=hp_t2">waxes rhapsodic about how low the price of gas was when Bush left office like getting there was such a boon?!
