Kansas wants federal funds to promote marriage
Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 06:57 AM by Seedersandleechers
Source: Kansas City Star

While turning down one federal handout last week, the administration of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback was applying for a different one.

No, thanks: $31.5 million for implementing the new federal health care law.

Please remit: $6.6 million to promote marriage.

The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services is seeking $2.2 million a year for three years to pay for counseling that encourages unwed parents to marry. Free marriage licenses would be given to those who do.

3. This is what pisses me off
"The state, for example, isn’t pursuing a slice of the $900 million that the federal government will give out over the next five years to help communities reduce chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease."

6. Don't you find it ironic?
They yap about "protecting life" and after that its nada. No health care for the less fortunate, execute every person you can on death row, invade other countries which causes more death on all aspects.

It is disgustingly pathetic.

Brownback is a hypocrite, as are all the TeaBagging fanatics, and this turn around from last week proves it.

And why is the Federal Government providing funds to promote marriage?

15. Touché
"That woman knew the man who shot George Tiller," Norma whispered. Her hands were flat on our table, as if she had to steady herself.

"She told me that the FBI came to her house and started questioning her after they arrested Roeder. She wouldn't tell them anything. She knew something like this was going to happen, but she'd known Roeder so long, and he was her friend, and she didn't know what to do. And the FBI just forced themselves into her house and tried to get her to tell them all about him."

"Wow," I said. I looked away, but the woman in purple was already gone. "What did you think of all that?"

"I was glad it happened," Norma said without pausing to consider the question. "I know I shouldn't say that, but I'm glad he was murdered. All those innocent babies. He got what he deserved. And I'm glad it shut down that practice for good. The state's better off for it."

"I don't know," I said. "I just can't get behind taking the law into your own hands like that," I said.

"Normally I'd say that, too, but not this time. Tiller got what he needed to, and people will remember it."

7. lol
so Kansans are choosing to live together. This isn't the business of state government. Counseling? Really?

The share of couples who are not married has risen in many places but is highest in areas that offer many people grim prospects for a better financial future: old industrial cities and the Mississippi Delta...

The bad economy may be contributing to the increase in unmarried couples. "Often, they live together not just for the companionship and to test their relationship but because it's cheaper than maintaining two households

9. Why do they need more carrots to promote marriage?
They provide $5,000 standard deduction for those married and filing jointly.
The federal govt already provides a standard deduction of $11,400 for those married and filing jointly.

If they are really serious about promoting marriage they should get the funding from the churches themselves. Why don't the churches pay the marriage filing fee?
