ST. PAUL, Minn. —

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is dropping out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination.

Pawlenty told supporters on a conference call Sunday morning that he would announce on ABC's "This Week" that he was ending his campaign after a disappointing finish in the Iowa straw poll on Saturday.

The poll was a test of organizational strength and popularity in the state whose caucuses lead off the GOP nomination fight.

Pawlenty had struggled to gain traction in Iowa, a state he had said he must win, after laying the groundwork for a campaign for nearly two years.

Editing to add the AP link and headline. I heard this first on Fox News, but they don't have a story up yet and their source was AP.

He cam in third. He must have inside polling that tells him to get out and most importanly he knows what his money situation is.

Maybe he bows out now to come back as VP.

30. Perhaps Tim finally realized that he sucks.
After enduring 8 years of his ego driven Governorship in Minnesota, I'm very happy to see this little thin skinned prick get a humiliating comeuppance. T-paw became a Right-wing ideologue out of political convenience. He trashed our State so he could get "street cred" with the Tea baggers, but even those whack-jobs could see him for the little weasel that he is as he tried to fake it.
So I give the Iowa republicans a little credit for looking into the crazy eyes of Bachmann and recognizing her as a "true" fellow traveler in their collective delusional quest to push our Nation back into the Middle Ages, and that T-paw just sucks.

31. Poor Pawlenty. He spent most of his last two years as governor barely in MN, he was so busy running
around Iowa and New Hampshire desperately trying to ingratiate himself with the GOP big money guys, and all for naught.

He actually started out as semi-sane, back in his first term as governor. Talked about climate change, alternative energy, protecting our resources - although he was always totally in the bag for the no taxes thing (he called new taxes "fees" instead :eyes: ).

But once he got the notion to run for president, he moved further and further right, suddenly got religion, and strove mightily to cultivate his inner crazy in hopes of getting national attention and repug approval.

It was never going to work. It was like watching a chihuahua trying to pass himself off as a wolf. Sorry, Tim, you'll never be more than an annoying little yapper.

sw (a Minnesotan)

37. I don't understand why folks feel like they have to drop out after a STRAW POLL, for god's sake.
Who cares about a straw poll (except the TV political reporters who have been waiting for ANY ELECTION AT ALL to obsess over!)

Didn't McCain place, like 10th in the Iowa Straw Poll, and then go on to get the nomination?

Pat Robertson won the Straw Poll in 1987!

Pawlenty must be broke.

42. He wasn't getting any traction from anybody
besides the lamestream media, who thought he was "sane", at least judged in comparison to other Republicons. He bet all of his chips on a big splash out of Ames, and he lost. If Bachmann had self-imploded in the New Hampshire debate, he might have had a chance, or if Perry had tossed his hat in the ring a bit earlier, taking the luster off of Bachmann for the fundies, he might have also prevailed.

As I recall correctly, Elizabeth Dole knew it was over after the Ames straw poll twelve years ago, too.

Obviously I would never vote for any of them, but it shows how extreme the Republican Party has become when someone who actually has some decent credentials as Pawlenty is withdrawing from the race.
This is good news for Obama, I think. There isn't a single Republican candidate that could really beat him.
