RNC Chair: Pay No Attention To The Wisconsin Recalls, National Reporters
Source: Talking Points Memo

RNC chair Reince Priebus, a former chair of the Wisconsin Republican Party, says there's no need for national political reporters to try and glean anything about the 2012 elections from the state Senate recall fight underway in his home state, where Democrats seem to have the momentum.

TPM SLIDESHOW: Mad In Madison: Wisconsin Workers Protest Against Governor's Budget Proposalsthat even though some of the key issues on the ballot in the coming weeks in his home state are "a similar debate to what we're having in the country," the "the localized nature of it doesn't allow it to be analogous to the 2012 election."

If the polls are to be believed, that's good news for the GOP.

In one of the first ballot tests of the race last month, Democrats won big. Democrats and their allies have been running hard on a message of Republican overreach in Wisconsin, following the epic standoff between Democrats and GOP Governor Soctt Walker (R) over labor rights earlier this year. That message has extended into the nationalized fight over health care and other spending priorities, with Democrats raising big money and racking up polling successes off ads like this one:

1. I disagree
I think this is a MUST win for the dems. As demoralized as everyone is over the Billionaire Bailout Bill (aka debt ceiling agreement) this win is exactly what is needed to spark that fire in people to actually stand up and fight for themselves again

...the Republicans hold on to the WI state senate next week, he'll be gloating about how "voters in America's heartland" have chosen "responsibility over partisanship", blah-blah-blah..... :eyes:

4. "Republican overreach" sounds pretty tame to me.
If I were writing the ads, they would go like this:

"They didn't campaign on destroying unions, but that's what they're doing.

They didn't campaign on purging school teachers, but that's what they're doing.

They didn't campaign on stripping peoples' RIGHT to vote, but that's what they're doing.

Republicans - elected on lies. Time's up"

Then there would be special ones for Randy Hopper and his whore, Judge Choke-hold, and the Green Bay deadbeat dad.

Why do we play so nice in what is really a death struggle?

8. Yes.
I would hit them as hard, long, and continuously as I possibly could. These are the sort of body blows are what is needed to put them out of office.

5. I'm guessing
his internal polling is showing him some bad news. Otherwise he'd be pointing to those races and saying the media needs to cover them.

This is a classic case of lowering expectations and deflection.

7. The nation already has the meme of this WI story and the union fight back in their heads. The story
should be followed up on. The GOP must be terrified. This is about people who stood up to the GOP bullies. And will win. Not a meme the GOP wants out there. Remember how worried they were about the arab spring coverage on the news at the time too? Let's make sure these WI recall elections make the news all the time. If you see national coverage call that network and thank them for the story and say you'd like them to follow it more.
