F.B.I. Investigates Assaults Near Michigan Campus

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The F.B.I. has joined with area police departments to investigate six assaults on young women, including two rapes, near the University of Michigan campus during the past two weeks.

The assaults have jolted the community of 108,000, which normally would be enjoying the quiet weeks between the Ann Arbor Art Fair in mid-July and students’ return to campus in early September for fall classes.

“I always thought Ann Arbor was so safe,” said Amanda Ahadi, 19, a University of Michigan sophomore.

Police officials in Ann Arbor say they have received hundreds of tips concerning the assaults, which began July 15, and more of them have flooded in since the most recent assault last Tuesday night. After that attack, the police released two sketches of possible suspects and advised residents on and off campus to take extra safety precautions.
