Boehner: I got 98 percent of what I wanted
By Scott Pelley

.......................

Pelley: You were unable to get your own caucus behind your bill a few days ago. Do you intend to remain Speaker of the House?

Boehner: I do. When you look at this final agreement that we came to with the white House, I got 98 percent of what I wanted. I'm pretty happy.

Pelley: Folks at home have been watching the acrimony, name calling, finger pointing. And I wonder whether the Congress has lost something, an ability to talk to each other, to settle down and make agreements?

Boehner: Well, there's the public noise and then there's the private discussion. Some of the most liberal members of Congress are great friends of mind. But the American people don't see the cooperation that exists off camera that really are the glue that holds this place together.

13. He preserved Obamacare, cut defense 600 billion, guaranteed the * tax cuts expire,
left social spending basically untouched, and legislated a committee to root out waste and fraud and close tax loopholes...if he wants to think that's what he wanted, the negotiation process has been pretty rough on him.

I think its like the last budget battle, where he came out all proud about getting just what he wanted, only to find out after the vote that he had gotten next to nothing at all.

14. better than 100% given he held ALL the cards...if you believe we
really had the deadline of August 2. Once again, Obama has to prove a negative. First with the stimulus (the country
was on the virtual edge of collapse) and now (the world economy would collapse.) With each he can now only try to make people
imagine life with a AA or worse rating.

Boehner played his cards well. Brilliantly he kept the crazies and half-crazies in his caucus united. He knew if he let the
half-crazies loose - they could easilly side with the Dems and agree to a more moderate/liberal agenda.

Pragmatist Obama knew waiting it out was his only hope...the only time he'd have any leverage with August 2nd looming. He jumped directly to the end result...the best case - what the half-crazies would agree to. I am sure he is lying in bed now, thinking "damn, phew, got out of that better than I had hoped."

16. Well shit french fry 2% is enough lube for a small compromise!
See that is the RATIONAL side of the GOP party - giving up 2% is considered vast negotiatings! The Tea Party party (vampires) will not compromise on 2%, it is what those GOP 'neocons' (Communist China) do! And Lord knows Tea baggers are far more irrational then the GOP! 110% or nothing!

18. boehner's been pwned.
And he doesn't even know it yet. His party is now toast. Obama set them up completely... he let them drive this deal to the very edge, just to prove they're freaking nuts. Obama walks away the moderate, the centrist, like Clinton, no longer the wild-eyed Liberal Progressive Socialist, suddenly fiscally responsible, suddenly the guy who can get both sides together, and the independents love it. And boehner comes across as completely sold-out to the ultra-fringy teabaggers, while the rethug candidates for prez are all keeping their distance from the deal and trying their best to appeal to the ridiculous right, hoping that they'll somehow outnumber the indies. But they won't. Because politics in recent years has created an extraordinarily large number of independent voters who look for signs of intelligence.

32. In 2010, we learned that 2008 rumors of the death of the Republican Party had been greatly
exaggerated (apologies to Mark Twain).

Neither Party will ever let the other Party die. How would either of them ever raise money if there were no more Eastasia?

27. Yeah, $1 trillion in cuts, most of it for social programs
And a great deal of federal funding for state programs will be eliminated altogether, dramatically squeezing state budgets, and ensuring that Republicans are elected and reelected as governors the nation over (promising to raise taxes is not much of a vote-getter). Boehner and the GOP really got the short end of the stick :eyes:
