Presidential historian, aide appear in US court, charged with conspiring to steal documents

BALTIMORE — A presidential historian facing federal theft and conspiracy charges involving historical documents from archives in several states will remain in federal custody over the weekend.

A judge will wait to consider prosecutors’ recommendation that Barry Landau remain in custody on Monday to give pretrial officials time to review his case.

Landau, 63, and Savedoff, 24, were indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday, accused of stealing and selling historical documents that include a letter from Benjamin Franklin and speeches by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

5. I agree. Aside from the criminality of the matter
there is the fact that those are national treasures belonging to the American people; also, putting them in the hands of private collectors denies other scholars access to them.
