Afghan war: Mayor of Kandahar killed in suicide attack
Source: BBC

The mayor of the volatile Afghan city of Kandahar, Ghulam Haidar Hameedi, has been killed in a suicide attack, officials say.

The attacker detonated explosives in his turban as the mayor made an address in courtyard of the city hall, police told AFP news agency.

This month has seen the killing of two other high-profile Afghan leaders.

The violence comes as Nato forces begin the handover of security to local troops in parts of the country.

5. The wheels seem to be coming off our massive success in Afghanistan.
Maybe another surge is the fix.

6. A turban-bomb, eh ...

Okay, all Afghans will now be banned from wearing turbans. Then there will a beard-bomb and all Afghans will be ordered to shave.

What an idiotic war. Remind me again, for what, now that OBL is gently swaying on the bottom of the ocean.

9. Not Afghans, but Americans.
Now no hats in airports. I assume we're about a decade away from having to be stripped fully nude and given a special hospital-gown-like item of clothing to wear on flights. No baggage allowed either. If you want something at your destination, buy it there or get it shipped.

10. That's why we travel light
1 carry-on plus a computer bag (more storage with a small Laptop), and no extra baggage fees or waiting at the carousel for checked baggage. While the Matrons with the Batwing Glasses are waiting for theirs, were already at the Car Rental Agency getting our ride out of Town.
I wore my NASA, 'I need my Space' baseball cap through Security, and all I got was a dirty look.

Just be polite, and understanding and you won't have you baggage gone through more than twice like I did.

8. Now THERE's a light at the end of the tunnel.
Out NOW!

The only smart thing Reagan ever did was to Cut & Run in Lebanon
after the Marine Barracks was bombed in 1983.
He was smart enough to get the USA out of countries where we weren't wanted.

Nothing GOOD will come from our prolonged stay in Afghanistan.

FDR won a World War on TWO fronts in 1/2 the time we have wasted in Afghanistan.

this is reaching sheer stupidity as they were able to plant a bomb in a turban? Out of control situation indeed.

Edit:

"The mayor had ordered the destruction of about 200 houses in the Loyawala area of Kandahar as they had been built illegally, and two children had been killed as they were knocked down on Tuesday, security sources said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said the Taliban had killed the mayor to avenge the deaths of the children in the demolition work, according to the Associated Press news agency."

We are losing the hearts and minds of Afghans quickly. Out now!!!

14. .Built illegally? Does that mean without paying bribes to anyone?
Or was there a violation of the Afghan zoning laws or building code?

200 homes gone.

Anyway, seems as though someone should be able to do demolition without killing 2 kids.

15. Coming up on nine years
We've certainly accomplished a lot in Afghanistan with nine years of war. Another nine years, and we'll just about have this licked into shape, like a Paul Wolfowitz spit-comb job. Besides, if we leave now, we risk losing all the gains we've made. War Without End, Amen.
