U.S. Republicans Hit Aid To Israel Neighbors, Pakistan
Source: Agence France-Presse

US Republicans moved Wednesday to cut aid to several of Israel's neighbors and to tighten control of assistance to Pakistan, vowing to get tough on Islamic militants and tame US spending.

The Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee pushed a range of issues in a spending bill for the fiscal year starting in October, including cutting US contributions to the United Nations and restricting funding for abortion.

But to come into force, Republican lawmakers will need to reach a compromise with the Senate where President Barack Obama's Democratic Party retains control and is mostly supportive of the administration's international engagements.

The House spending bill would end decades of US security aid to Egypt, where protests swept out President Hosni Mubarak in February, unless the new leaders fully implement a peace treaty with Israel and exclude the Muslim Brotherhood.

1. Talk about telling: The countries don't even rate to be named, they're just "Israel's neighbors"

I mean, how much does that say about our focus in the Middle East? Think that's telling? Three things about this bill:

:redbox: "...end decades of US security aid to Egypt...unless the new leaders fully implement a peace treaty with Israel and exclude the Muslim Brotherhood"
:redbox: The Republicans would also cut off security assistance to Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority and Yemen if Islamic militant movements such as Hezbollah and Hamas hold any position in government.

Even if, they're Democratically elected? Yes, even if they're Democratically elected!

:redbox: The bill would also force the United States to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
From the article quoted in the OP, specific to this point:
Like most countries that recognize Israel, the United States maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv as it waits for a settlement on hotly contested Jerusalem.

Congress, where Israel enjoys strong support, in 1995 required the United States to move the embassy to Jerusalem but three presidents have deferred the shift. Under the House bill, the president would lose the waiver right in 2014.

What an...interesting...piece of legislation! BTW, do y'all think those countries we're taking a shit on (not Israel, of course) are going to scramble over themselves to make the changes we like...or just find new countries, financially solvent countries, to buy and get aid from?

HINT: These two countries are just waiting to become the new sugar daddies of the Middle East:

2. If the leader is not our thug,
then democracy is "off the table".
Not sure why we don't just go ahead and make Israel a state, and be done with it.
Would we still send them 3B a year?

8. Breaking. Republican House still wasting time on bills that won't pass the Senate. Film at 11.
How about worrying about the taxpayer money and government time being wasted on this kind of crap? All in, salaries and benefits for Reps, and their staffs and support staffs for both and real estate, etc. these fools have been wasting a ton of taxpayer money and time that should be devoted to bills that have a prayer of making it off the desk of the President.

What's next? More Freedom Fries legislation?

Not enough people are calling them on this.

10. So Obama can veto that sort of crap?
If so, that's good news. If it's not, then thanks to those lunatic Republicans, the US is continuing to hurtle down the path to becoming the laughing stock of the world...
