Julian Assange a great dissident, says his father
Source: The Guardian

Julian Assange's biological father has described his son as a "great dissident" in what he said would be his first and probably only media interview.

John Shipton, who has been attending the Assange extradition hearing in London, spoke to the Spanish newspaper el País and confirmed that his son did not get to know him until his mid-20s.

"I have kept my mouth closed so as not to hinder things," said Shipton, whose name Assange used to register the Wikileaks.org domain name in 2006.

Shipton met Assange's mother, Christine, then aged 17, at an antiques shop on his way to a Vietnam war demonstration – which she joined. Little is known about the relationship, except that it had ended by the time of their son's first birthday – if not earlier. Christine then married theatre director Brett Assange.

2. A proud father
And so he should be.

He may come off as a bit arrogant or defensive, but I can forgive him of that considering the onslaught of attacks he receives from the corporate press, not to mention the ridiculous house arrest and bogus "rape" charges.

It should not be just about him, but the press needs to make the front person of Wikileaks into a celebrity. Its not his fault, it would have happened to anyone who was the head of an organization that embarrasses them with actually practicing "freedom of the press". Its in fact a thankless job and I'd be proud as hell if he were my son.

14. Mostly what the modern
press practices is "Freedom to parrot whatever press release the powers that be decide to put out."

Assange is an actual journalist. He actually investigates things. He puts out stuff that the government would rather keep a tight lid on.
I'd send him money to a legal defense fund if I could.

5. I can't agree with that. Sorry.
If that label were ever to be applied to anyone, that would be one Dave Emory, of Los Altos Hills, Calif.:

7. Julian Assange is a traitor to America.
I can hardly wait for the Swedes to extradite him back to the US for trial.

8. How can he be a "traitor to America?"
He is not a citizen of any "American" country.

9. Or at least he helped the treason.
It was a hard wake-up call for me, personally. I actually really liked the guy, Brad Manning too.

10. The wake-up call for me was the lax security on Government networks.

Every Gov. computer connected to the Internet and simultaneously connected to a "secure" network becomes a gateway.
