Pentagon Cites Largest-Ever Loss Of Defense Data In Cyberattack
Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is revealing that it suffered one of its largest-ever losses of sensitive defense data this spring to a cyber attack that it blames on an unspecified foreign government.

The loss is an example of why the Pentagon has developed new cyber security rules that emphasize deeper defenses, more collaboration with private industry and new steps to stop thefts by malicious insiders.

William Lynn, the deputy secretary of defense, said in a speech outlining the new strategy that 24,000 files were stolen from a defense industry computer network in a single intrusion in March. He offered no details.

In an interview, Lynn said the Pentagon has a good idea who made the attack but he would not offer details. He said it was by a nation rather an individual.

1. That is a terrorist attack
OH good, another war

And if they do not go after that government then I would think the case against Manning is pretty much over

22. Oh really? So what is Stuxnet?
As you reap, so you shall sow. Except that Stuxnet (if the story of that is accurate) was an actual attack on Iranian infrastructure.

If this latest story is even true then the offense committed would be called espionage. Now consider that the source is the Palace of Lies itself, and that the story amounts to "something happened but we can't tell you what!"

28. Right. They're going to go after Israel or China?
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 02:24 AM by saras
Suppose it is a terrorist attack.

Suppose it's an attack by a country that we can't do anything about.

Then what?

3. This is the real threat to us
"the Pentagon has developed new cyber security rules that emphasize deeper defenses, more collaboration with private industry."

The M.I.C. is in full swing and we're on our way to an Orwellian world, and what are we doing about it ?

As far as I can see, bending over and accepting every day of it. If this were the 60's we'd be in the streets protecting our rights.

Instead they have us so worn out, working two jobs to keep our homes and families together, any free time is spent playing video games
or watching sports.

When they come to take you down, when they bring that wagon round, don't forget you saw my name, warning of this day.

6. Probably closer to the truth
I have no doubt there are attacks...all the time. There are breaches all the time. This one is probably inflated for scare purposes.

My sources in the gov't ranks tell me that the DOD as part of their cost-cutting measures is reducing the number of contractors in the IT ranks.

This article is probably the contracting company's defense mechanism kicking in when it's threatened.

21. Exactly. I just read an article today that they are planning to
'militarize' the internet, whatever that means, supposedly to ward off cyber attacks from 'terrorists'. I wonder how much of people's personal data they've already collected and how many forums they cruise pretending to be ordinary posters, as they once planned to do, btw.

Soon, there will be the equivalent of 'road blocks' on the internet. If you don't say the right thing, in a poll maybe??, you will be 'detained'! :eyes:

It was only a matter of when, not if, that they would want to control the internet, if they aren't already.

8. 24,000 Pentagon files stolen in major cyber breach, official says
Source: Washington Post

The Defense Department lost 24,000 files to “foreign intruders” in the spring in what appears to be one of the most damaging cyberattacks ever on the U.S. military, a top Pentagon officials acknowledged on Thursday.

Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III, who disclosed the March breach during a speech to roll out the Pentagon’s new cyber strategy, said the files were taken from a defense contractor. He did not describe the nature of the files that were stolen or who was believed to be behind the attack.

“It is a significant concern that over the past decade, terabytes of data have been extracted by foreign intruders from corporate networks of defense companies,” Lynn said.

14. "doesn't specify which nation".........
I'm sure if it were Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, or Pakistan, it would be in bold headlines.
I guess if it's a "friendly" nation, then it becomes "unspecified.".......Interesting.
How many people are there with dual citizenships that work in the Pentagon? Shouldn't
take the Pentagon long to figure that out.

15. It's a stumper, isn't it?
I wonder if the unnamed nation could have an "Isr" in its name, and end in "ael"? Six letters. You have five minutes. Go!

The solution, of course, will be to throw more money at the national defense budget. Which is always the best method for solving any security-related difficulties. However, it never works when you're talking about a jobs program, or improving schools, or raising healthier kids.

Probably to be blamed on China or Russia, depending on whether we are at war with Eastasia or Eurasia this week.
