U.S. to require more gun-buyer information in border states
Source: LA Times

Once the ATF distributes its new reporting forms, about 7,000 dealers near the border must report multiple sales of semi-automatic weapons in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Such weapons "are highly sought after by dangerous drug trafficking organizations and frequently recovered at violent crime scenes near the Southwest border," Cole said.

5. Everyones head should explode,
No matter what you think about the gun issue, is this the right way for the government to act:

1. Claim that US gun rights are the cause of violence in Mexico.
2. Knowingly and purposefully facilitate and allow criminal activity that is a large part of the cause of gun violence in Mexico.
3. Use that to restrict the rights of US citizens?

Hey, maybe gun laws should be tightened, but not because our own government facilitated the breaking of laws and murder.

13. Fail -US gun dealers sell thousands of guns to Mexican cartels each year
Fast and Furious clearly proved this is happening - without a doubt

How does this "restrict the rights of US citizens"?

It doesn't

fail

14. do you have a source?
The only source we have are the people who we know let guns that killed hundreds of people into mexico. also, by the way adding "fail" to a post does not in fact in any way strengthen an argument, fyi.

20. FAIL -the gun dealers were told to make the sales by the ATF. They wouldn't have been made otherwise

2. So
The traffickers will just go further north. Besides, aren't the states supposed to be treated equally when it comes to Federal laws?

To me, this is worse than a non-solution.

3. Two checkboxes necessary on the form
"Do you intend to give these weapons to the Mexican drug runners?"

"Has this transfer been approved by the ATF?"

15. Only if you buy it from an FFL dealer
I can go to most states and buy a long gun from a private seller. Cash and carry. No forms.

I own over 50 guns and have only filled out the 4472 on about 10% of them. All legal.

7. I'm in favor of this law...
In truth, criminals will still break the laws. They're criminals. Unless we get rid of all our guns (never going to happen) then making it a bit trickier/harder is all that you can hope for.

Mexican drug cartels do gain access to guns with loose laws near the border. This is about as much as you can ask for in my opinion.

9. I understand that...
What I'm saying is that the laws themselves are getting affected here. Under those circumstances, this is about as good as it will get until mentalities change in both countries.

18. ATF runs guns to the cartels to kill American citizens
the death of American citizens is used as an excuse to limit the rights of law abiding citizens.
ATF runs more guns to cartels. More Americans die. More rights taken away.

Repeat as needed.

Next up: police machine gun peaceful line of people waiting to vote. Should voter rights be rethought in this country to prevent such tragedies?

19. What law?
This change in procedure is the result of administrative fiat, not a change in the law.

17. And this will protect us from guns shipped to cartels by the ATF?
The people responsible for the problem are in charge of fixing it and they're doing so by blaming everyone else.

This won't help at all.
