James Murdoch could face corporate legal charges in US and UK over News of the World phone hacking
Source: Telegraph

James Murdoch could reportedly face legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic in the wake of the News of the World phone-hacking scandal, under legislation designed to preserve privacy and stamp out corrupt corporate behaviour.

By Katherine Rushton, Telecoms, technology and media correspondent

3:10PM BST 09 Jul 2011

Both News Corp and James Murdoch himself could face corporate legal battles under America’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the UK’s Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, which outlaws the interception of communications.

Murdoch, whose position as Rupert Murdoch’s heir apparent has become increasingly tenuous with the unfolding of the phone hacking scandal, has admitted that he misled parliament over the phone hacking, although he said he did not have a complete picture at the time.

He has also confessed that he personally authorised out-of-court settlements, widely viewed as hush money to cover up the allegations of telephone hacking.

1. I'm not sure our gov. had a clear enough conscience to go after someone else for phone spying.

2. Democrats should smell blood in the water
And if they do, they'll be quick to get some bandages to stop the bleeding. Obama will be quick to throw some 'fucking retards' overboard as chum.

4. The law of unintended consequences....
wouldn't be an issue if Rupert hadn't fought so hard to incorporate NewsCorp as a US company (which he had to do in order to extend his US media holdings.)

At this point, not terribly likely (per prosecution) - but if/when the legs + toxicity of this unfolding implosion continues - those odds just will keep shifting out of favor for young Murdoch.

5. Still cynical about this, but hoping like hell it happens.
It's taken five years for the scandal to finally blow up in the UK. I hope that the snowball rolls smoothly over the Atlantic and that it won't take as long here.

6. I am pretty cynical myself over anything being done since
in essence news corp is the GOPs sock puppet and since it would cripple them if anything happened to it they probably will do whatever it takes to either outright kill any investigation or soften the blow so that news corp stays largely intact.

7. The corporate media
will spin it and claim that Murdock is the victim, and all the God fearing Christians will come out in huge numbers to protect this man of God.

Murdoch owns them. They don't own him or even have the slightest idea on how to control him, or even the desire to want to.

24. To compromise him to that
extent though proof would have to be discovered (good luck with that as they have had more than enough time to destroy most if not all of that) that he approved of the hacking and or knew of it and did nothing to stop it when it was ongoing.
Even then he has so many connections to politicians, judges and varies people in government and or connected to the government that getting a meaningful conviction will probably be next to impossible.

16. Must not forget, per Pelosi, Obama, Holder
We must look forward, not backward. The crimes of Murdoch, et. al. will almost certainly fit into the "can't look backward" category.
