Bush Pitches Tax Cuts On 'Tax Day'
April 15, 2004
(CBS/AP) Introduced as the "tax-cutter-in-chief," President Bush marked tax return deadline day by saying the tax cuts enacted on his watch have made the economy stronger, reports CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller.
"Tax day is something most people don't look forward to, but this year it's a little better because of the tax relief we delivered and the economy is stronger for it," Mr. Bush said.
The president made his tax day remarks during a quick trip to Iowa, a state he lost in 2000 but hopes to win this year. He cast a spotlight on his economic record, declaring that while inflation and interest rates are low, home ownership is at the highest rate ever.
The president said the American people expect the government to keep the taxpayers' burden as low as possible and "I take that responsibility seriously."
