Afghan Hospital Bomb Kills Dozens

Afghanistan: Attack on Logar hospital kills dozens

At least 25 people have been killed and dozens injured in a car bomb attack at a hospital in Afghanistan's Logar province, local officials say.

The hospital building was destroyed and people buried under rubble. Casualties included women, children and elderly.

The Afghan health ministry said the attack was unprecedented and inhumane.

Officials blamed the Taliban, but a Taliban spokesman said the movement did not target civilians and the blast was caused by "someone with an agenda". However, the BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul says the Taliban is always careful to distance itself from major attacks with large numbers of civilian casualties.

Some earlier reports said 60 people had died in the attack.

1. Horrible. Absolutely horrible..
Two things I would like to comment on. First, I like the Taliban spokesman saying that they didn't target civilians. Oh, thank God. You're just killing other people. Good to know.

Secondly, I hate to have to bring this up, but I hate the "casualties included women, children and elderly" portion of this post. I get it. People feel that women, children and old people deserve to live more. But, as a man, I kind of like living, too. I kind of assumed that my life was also important. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't die less if kids, old people and women were dying around me. I'd be just as dead.

2. Those groups are less likely to defend themselves is the reason
they are mentioned. It increases the sympathy factor also as the rhetoric should. But to target a hospital is beyond the pale as ALL-yes including men-are defenseless.

6. Yes, this goes beyond anything you'd ever wan to imagine..
I just think that an innocent life is valuable, regardless. I'm sure most, yourself included, would agree.

5. More to come; Atrocities unending...
I heard Col. Jack Jacobs (ret), MOH recipient, say on MSNBC that he believes that Afghanistan, in toto, will never be able to be governed from Kabul. That there are too many factions, i.e. clans, tribes, ethnic groups, to enable Afghanistan to be a viable and stable country in the modern sense. I believe him. When the ISAF leaves, the 'country' will wallow in a vicious, bloody uncivil war resulting in 'rule by warlord' in various regions according to said factions. There might be a 'rump' country called Afghanistan surrounding Kabul ruled by a despot, but that's about it. Look at Pakistan with its ungovernable no-go tribal regions. Perfect example.

7. If the cost of the war had been paid in dollars to a multinational development fund...
Edited on Sun Jun-26-11 01:03 AM by JackRiddler
that would dispense under supervision and on a timetable, but only after peaceful resolution and undisputed elections...

I mean, that would have been hundreds of billions. Incentive.

Not sure about Afghanistan, but this would have definitely worked in Iraq.

But war is more profitable for the warmakers.
