Attorney: Vet pleads guilty to lesser charges in Westboro stalking case

Source: Kansas City Star

WICHITA — An Army veteran charged with stalking and conspiring to harm members of a controversial Topeka church pleaded guilty to lesser charges this morning, his attorney said.

Ryan Newell pleaded guilty in Sedgwick County District Court to two counts of false impersonation of an officer — each "non-person" misdemeanors. He is receiving a six-month sentence on each count but is being released on a two- year probation, said his attorney, Boyd McPherson.

"We had been working on a resolution for... six months," McPherson said. "I think both the District Attorney's Office and I wanted to feel comfortable that the case was at a point where it could be disposed of."

Newell, who lost both legs in Afghanistan, had been charged with felony conspiracy to commit aggravated battery and these misdemeanors: stalking, unlawful use of a weapon and false impersonation.

This Vet should receive nothing short of a medal of honor. IMO.

1. why can't they prosecute the anti-abortion stalkers who do the same thing?
It seems they have to murder people before anyone takes notice.

Would they picket one of their own?
I know when the old man goes, they are going to have a serious time keeping all the picketers away.

4. Would hate to be the judge in this case.
How do you separate "law" from "justice"? It would make me sick.

5. So, he was arrested in their parking lot, with a pile of weapons and ammo....
...And the judge lets him go.... on probation.

That's a pretty strong message being sent, there.

--
Westboro spokeswoman Margie Phelps said this afternoon: "We appreciate the work the District Attorney's Office did, and we're pleased with the outcome, and we hope Mr. Newell gets the help he needs. ... We're supposed to be merciful."
--

Yeah. Sure, Phelps. We've seen your "mercy" enough times already. Now you've seen the judges.

13. As disgusting as the Phelps are...
they still get 1st Amendment protections. Remember when the National Socialist Party (aka neo-nazi fuckheads) wanted to march in Skokie, IL(which has a large Jewish population)? The courts ruled that they did have that right. You and I disagree on some things, but I think we both can agree that democracy can sometimes be messy.

6. You know, when you think about it...
Fred Phelps said this at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum during a protest in 1996:

"Whatever righteous cause the Jewish victims of the 1930s–40s Nazi Holocaust had, (probably minuscule, compared to the Jewish Holocausts against Middle Passage Blacks, African Americans and Christians—including the bloody persecution of Westboro Baptist Church by Topeka Jews in the 1990s), has been drowned in sodomite semen. American taxpayers are financing this unholy monument to Jewish mendacity and greed and to filthy fag lust. Homosexuals and Jews dominated Nazi Germany ... The Jews now wander the earth despised, smitten with moral and spiritual blindness by a divine judicial stroke ... And God has smitten Jews with a certain unique madness ... Jews, thus perverted, out of all proportion to their numbers energize the militant sodomite agenda... Jews are the real Nazis."

In truth, shouldn't we have let this guy kill Phelps at least?

9. Phelps in Joplin
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 04:51 PM by JDHight
The Phelps group was supposed to protest in tornado-ravaged
Joplin, but did not show up when and where they had planned.
I read that they were denied lodging at Neosho, MO, and that
their van was blocked at the motel they finally found and by
truckers at the Flying J. They were thwarted at their every
move. The Westboro group had planned on protesting at
Missouri Southern State University, where President Obama was
speaking, but did not arrive. Too bad they did not since
there were over 200 motorcyclists and almost 1,000 others
waiting for them, including about 30 law enforcement officers.
They were smart not to show up at MSSU since many rednecks
were ready for them.

8. I think he should have gone to trial instead of taking a deal.
Of course I'm not the one in front of the judge, but I doubt he would have been convicted.

10. What the hell is this?
I expect this sort of bullshit from Phelps or the Freepers.

What this veteran did was WRONG.
He had the intention to harm the Phelps people, maybe even kill them.

So it's all right to have people beaten or killed for what they believe, even if their belief is abhorrent?

17. This is a man who didn't fire a shot, being put on probation....
...for lying about being a cop.

Interesting how you knew what his intent was. Maybe it was his intent to make them feel uncomfortable, but not harm them?
