Weiner formally submits resignation from the House
WASHINGTON | Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:11pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Anthony Weiner on Monday formally submitted his letter of resignation from the House of Representatives, effective at midnight on Tuesday.

Under pressure from President Barack Obama and other fellow Democrats, Weiner announced his resignation last week after being ensnared in an Internet sex scandal in which he sent lewd photos of himself to women online.

1. Here's hoping he can be back in action soon!
He was a powerful voice for us in the House, but he can also do a lot from outside of Congress. He may have to do stuff 'behind the scenes' for a while, but he does have a lot to offer!

3. He was a loud voice, certainly, and a strident one.
I'm not sure about powerful, though. I can't remember any important bill he introduced or anything he got done by the strength of his voice.

It's good that he spoke out. It's not so good that nothing much came of his speaking. More's the pity.

4. You're correct. He had the "power" of a Sunday pundit, able to yell very loudly.
Which doesn't make you an effective Congressman.

5. I'm not criticizing him. I'm just aware that the only "power"
in Congress comes with the ability to get legislation adopted, and I don't see any sign that Weiner could do that.

He was certainly a voice for progressivism, but the impact was more on bloggers than his colleagues. With a different political makeup of the House, though, it might have been different. We can help with that in 2012, if we're willing to work together instead of bickering among ourselves.
