Criminal charges to proceed against Detroit mom in standoff with cops
Doug Guthrie/ The Detroit News

Detroit— Criminal charges will proceed against a mother who allegedly fired a shot at police when they entered her home on orders obtained by child protective service workers to take her teen daughter on claims of abuse for discontinuing psychotropic drug therapy.

A Wayne County judge last week reversed a Detroit judge's earlier order to hold off on criminal charges against Maryanne Godboldo, the Wayne County Prosecutor's office announced today. A date has yet to be set for the criminal probable cause hearing in 36th District Court.

Godboldo is charged with assault, discharge of a weapon, opposing an officer and use of a firearm in commission of a felony for the March 24 confrontation at her west side home that resulted in a long standoff with police.

The case has drawn nationwide attention from groups opposed to government interference in parental decisions, those concerned about the safety of childhood immunizations and others opposed to the use of the controversial anti-psychotic drug, Risperdal, to treat schizophrenia in children.

2. She is being prosecuted for firing a weapon at police officers, not for
refusing to medicate her daughter.

How controversial is Riperdal? It is approved for use in adolecents:

Why is this medication prescribed?

Risperidone is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) in adults and teenagers 13 years of age and older. It is also used to treat episodes of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited, or irritated mood) or mixed episodes (symptoms of mania and depression that happen together) in adults and in teenagers and children 10 years of age and older with bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). Risperidone is also used to treat behavior problems such as aggression, self-injury, and sudden mood changes in teenagers and children 5-16 years of age who have autism (a condition that causes repetitive behavior, difficulty interacting with others, and problems with communication). Risperidone is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

The real question is whether the child is properly diagnosed. If she is suffering from schizophenia, and if she is responsive to Risperdal, than for the mother to with hold the drug and use holistic means is right up there with parents who try to cure diabetes with prayer instead of insulin.

Don't forget; a lot of people think global climate change is a controversial theory, too. Just because something is controversial doesn't mean the concerns are valid.

3. This shit is poison and shouldn't be on the market. I don't agree with her firing
a shot at police who were just doing their job. But CPS should stay the hell out of forcing parents to give toxic drugs to their kids. Just my opinion, and I know what I'm talking about. My daughter was on this shit for a short while, and almost died from a suicide attempt. And she's not schitzo, has other problems. Big Pharma are all criminals in my humble opinion.

10. So your personal bad experience is proof all prescription drugs are evil?
If your daughter were allergic to a specific antibiotic, would that make all antibiotics evil?

You need a statistics class.

5. Of course the serious crime alleged is shooting at officers, but I have to wonder why and...
...under what authority CPS escalated this case to the point of an armed raid by police on a private home.

8. That's a list of all reported side effects with no notation as to
how common they are. For comparison:

What side effects can this medication cause?

Ibuprofen may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms, or those mentioned in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately. Do not take any more ibuprofen until you speak to your doctor.

blurred vision, changes in color vision, or other vision problems

red or painful eyes

stiff neck

headache

confusion

aggression

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000598/

Over the counter ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) can cause aggression?

As someone who had dealt with mental illness myself and with my children, I am well aware that the use of these medications requires careful monitoring to ensure that they are effective in a particular case and not causing harm. I wanted to note that metal illness is serious and can be treated. Modern drugs are not the happy pills or heavy duty tranquilizers of the 50's and 60's. When the right drug is used, it makes the difference between a normal life and living in hell. CPS may have acted incorrectly in this case, but that doesn't change my view that if the child is mentally ill, failing to treat her constitutes neglect.

11. Yep. She could have fought back via the courts
once you start shooting at the police you kinda lose legitimacy.

7. CPS violated the agreement they made with the mother
Court documents show the mother agreed to a treatment program using Risperdal, but the agreement also indicates she had the right to withdraw the drug's use at any time.

If I were the judge, I'd throw out the charges against the mother and hold CPS in contempt of court and violation of the agreement.
