1. I'm in Santa Fe, and drove
home from work at 8pm, just about an hour ago. Visibility, which is normally practically unlimited here, was down to about three miles. The air was a yellowish-orangish-gray, and there was a distinct smell of smoke everywhere. And not a nice woodsmoke smell, but a sharp, nasty odor. I'm inside now, and since I don't have a/c I don't have my windows closed, but I have shut windows on the side of the house with the breeze from the west.

5. Fire getting close to NM

From the link

CATRON COUNTY, N.M. -- The wall of fire that is consuming 233,000 acres of Arizona is getting dangerously close to western New Mexico's border, and residents said they are starting to get scared.

The town of Luna in Catron County is just 15 miles from the massive fire, and officials said they are in pre-evacuation status.

------------------

We are 240 miles southeast of Santa Fe. Couple of days ago there was an acrid, burning smell in our town from the AZ fires.

10. I'm in Abq -- earlier tonight the sky suddenly filled up with smoke, it was amazing
It has a nice smell, woodfire -- but it's too much, choking. I'm glad we're not closer. As it is I thought the house next door was on fire, it was so smoky. And the sunset sky was a strange reddish yellow, in all directions, eerie.

8. Between floods, fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, ...
maybe we should all become nomads and live in modern day gypsy caravans, moving with the seasons to avoid being in a bad place at a bad time. Spend hurricane season out west of the hurricane belt, tornado season up north of the tornado belt, wildfire season away from dry vegetation. Earthquakes wouldn't be a problem because living in a gypsy wagon there's nothing to fall on your head when the shaking starts, and a wagon that has held together down bumpy dirt roads is sure not going to fall to pieces in an earthquake.

11. White Mountains
I live about 25 miles, as the crow flies, from this fire, I was here in 2002 when the Chedisky fire was burning Heber and Overguard it was tragic, and this one is gaining ground fast, it's really scary. I could see the smoke clouds from Concho Highway today, yesterday, I woke up to smokey skies, now the winds are blowing toward New Mexico, I feel so bad for those people in the path of the fire, it's terrifying to be so close to so much uncontrollable destruction, they are all in my prayers tonight, I'm also praying for the wind to die down, that would be a great help to the firefighters who came from all over the country to help in this fight, thank you, you're all hero's. :applause: :yourock:
