Colorado congressman Doug Lamborn is one of nine House members asking that funds be yanked from programs that finance the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden.

The request by the Republican from Colorado Springs and others was sent Thursday to the House Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development.

The lawmakers ask that funding in the 2012 budget be eliminated for the Department of Energy's Office of Science and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy programs because they "have failed to live up to their supposed potential."

Leave it to Lamborn to try to eliminate one of the most successful and job-producing organizations in Colorado.

1. A lot of jobs
I wish we could get over all the pissing about jobs. Moving dirt from south to north on Mondays and from north to south on Tuesdays creates jobs. NREL jobs are not exactly in the same category as that. If they give up on NREL jobs, we might as well give up on energy altogether, huddling together under buffalo hides in the winter and walking everywhere. That would be real conservative, conserving body heat and steps.

2. Worthwhile jobs. Several years ago, Bush did a flip-flop on funding.
Bush's budget planned big cuts but he was planning a visit to NREL. The cuts would have been a big embarrassment so they had to quickly add more funds. I think NREL made out like a bandit.

NREL has become a massive complex sitting on the side of South Table Mountain in Golden. At first glance someone might say it really is a waste of money. So clearly NREL needs to do some PR to tell us what good they are doing. Like all of us, they need to justify their existence. Nevertheless, even if they are just moving dirt from point "A" to point "B", they ARE taking money that the Republicans would probably just waste on wars.

3. Lomborn's district
includes Jesus Land (Colorado Springs) and Fort Carson. It's the most conservative district in the state and is solidly Republican. Pelmutter's district includes Denver and is a swing district, comprised of equal numbers of Democrats, Republicans and Independents. In 2003 the Republicans gerrymandered the district solidly into their camp. the Democrats sued and won, stopping the redistricting scheme. Causing more economic woe in the 7th District serves the purposes of the Republicans and show what shameless opportunists they are.

4. GOP doesn't believe in anything but oil
They also don't believe in climate change or in oil supplies running out. After all, G-d created us to "have dominion over the earth," per their religious right supporters. I don't think G-d meant us to wreck it!
