Storms leave 50,000 in dark, destroy S.C. governor's SUV

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Severe thunderstorms swept across South Carolina leaving more than 50,000 residents without electricity, downing trees and even causing damage at the governor's mansion.

The first family was not harmed.

SCE&G reported on its website that more than 50,000 customers were without power early Friday. Most of the outages were in Lexington and Richland counties.

A Toyota FJ Cruiser SUV belonging to Gov. Nikki Haley's husband was crushed by a falling tree at the governor's residence Thursday night. The governor told WLTX in Columbia that two exterior doors and a gate at the mansion were also damaged.
