Controversy dogs Chomsky as he accepts Sydney Peace Prize
John Huxley
June 2, 2011

IN A move likely to spark another annual round of healthy controversy, the veteran American linguist, social scientist and human rights campaigner Noam Chomsky was named 2011 winner of the Sydney Peace Prize last night.

Professor Chomsky said he was honoured by the award, whose previous recipients include the South African cleric Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Palestinian activist Hanan Ashwari and the Australian journalist John Pilger.

In recent weeks the 82-year-old has been one of America's most-hated men, subjected to ''obscenities, intellectual hysteria and death threats'' over remarks following the shooting of Osama bin Laden.

...The al-Qaeda leader's crimes, he wrote, were vastly exceeded by those of the former president George Bush. ''We might ask how we would be reacting if Iraqi commandos landed at his compound, assassinated him and dumped his body in the Atlantic.''

5. By every measure, including the number of Americans killed because of his decisions.
Dubya comes from a mob family of cold-blooded killers who keep their hands clean.

9. Crimes are committed by those who wear the black hats (our enemies), not the good guys (us)
who wear the white hats and for whom the rules and international law don't apply. :patriot:

8. True...
... and even if they did, the 'majority of Americans' are more concerned with getting/keeping a job, feeding their families, paying the bills etc. to pay attention to what he has to say... and even if they did pay attention, I dare say they'd disagree with him on this issue. Professor Chomsky may be correct about the technical legal aspects of the event, but I feel that the 'majority of Americans' wanted OBL dead, dead, dead and they didn't care how. Only that the deed was done. I call 'em as I see 'em...

10. Yes, let us not insist on the law
When it's far more efficient and effective to just take a shortcut. Besides, everyone feels really, really good because the man everyone agrees was very, very bad is dead. Start questioning the actions of the empire, pretty soon you start questioning its legitimacy. And that can only lead to more bad things, so knock it the hell off.

I usually agree with his analysis of events.

12. Lol.
What a world we live in when peace, intelligence, and speaking to truth
are considered "controversial."

14. From the article,

"Controversy dogs Chomsky as he accepts Sydney Peace Prize"

"The al-Qaeda leader's crimes, he wrote, were vastly exceeded by those of the former president George Bush."

I, for one, would find it hard to disagree with that statement.

When he goes on to state, "We might ask how we would be reacting if Iraqi commandos landed at his (Bush's) compound, assassinated him and dumped his body in the Atlantic", I can only say it wouldn't break my heart.
