New Mexico plans to stop food stamp supplement for elderly
Source: Associated Press / KOB TV

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susana Martinez's administration proposes to end a program that supplements federal food stamp benefits for about 4,000 low-income elderly and disabled New Mexicans.

The Human Services Department plans to stop the assistance on July 1 because there's no money in the state budget for it.

The program cost nearly a half million dollars last year.

1. Yeah, old folks don't need all that food anyway. Besides, if we give the...
... money to a corporation, they might create a job some day.

7. That's the crazy thing
The corporations still get their money when they spend it at the grocery store.

I wonder how much the food corporations lobby to keep food stamp programs.

2. Glad I do not live in New Mexico.
I am what you would consider elderly, but I do not need food stamps. But should I ever, I am glad I live in Georgia unless our governor decides to follow suit along with New Mexico.

4. Who needs poor elderly who vote for Democrats? Let's find a way to...
get rid of them simply by starving them to death!!!

Sounds like a great pro business plan...saving lots of (half a million) dollars, in a state with billions in federal military contracts!!!!

Let's just eliminate the opposition in the simplest way possible...starve them to death!!

Edited on Tue May-31-11 07:09 PM by SoapBox

9. I hope they keep this stuff up
and are destroyed at the ballot box for a generation for it. It seems that we have to hit bottom before people look past the rhetoric and finally wake up. I feel just awful for the seniors these policies will affect.

16. Yep--endorsed by none other than Sarah Palin.
And freely elected by the majority of voters in New Mexico , who are all over the map in their voting habits. We elect a lot of Democrats ; currently both Senators and 2 out of 3 Congressman, and majorities in both the state Senate and House etc but we had a Repub Congressperson in this district for years, and Pete Domenici is like a god here... so we also have elected right wingers, and Martinez is about as vile as they get. She had a lot of Texas oil money behind her, and a weak Democratic opponent too. Still, no excuse for electing someone as sickening as Susanna Martinez.

She asked for the money from the legislature. They wouldn't fund extending the program. Oh, did I mention Democrats control our legislature? How's that for fucked up?

17. Democrats control the legislature
And they refused to fund the program after the Gov asked for $600K for an extension.

Shame on them.
