so downstream is going to be pretty nasty for the next couple of days.

Stay safe DUers.

Luckily the mountains kind of screw up the progress. I'd had to be on flat ground when this passes through.

A couple of weeks ago it was ten times as miserable.

April saw record wind in NM, and whaddya know? It also saw record tornado activity east of here.

and doesn't let up. They use the term for cells that last a long time and pick up lots of debris. At least that's how I learned it . :)

Grinders are bad news-really bad news.

8. I frickin ***HATE*** storm season
The weather conditions here in Oklahoma are right for tornados.

I already have the gloves and the flashlight and the batteries and the doggie halters and my wallet and credit cards and a battery powered radio and doggie meds and blankets and pillows and a fully charged cellphone stashed in the hallway - with all the doors into the hallway closed except for the one into the bathroom. Car is garaged. Picked up a rotisserie chicken and am settled in to watch weather broadcasts until it clears this area - and the area further east where I have family.

Be safe DUers.

I'm in Missouri, my brother is in Oklahoma. My family is originally from Wisconsin and La Crosse took a hit this weekend.

It's no longer funny. There are plenty of liberals in those areas that are taking nasty hits yet some on here feel the need to smack them around and make jokes at their expenses.

26. Sorry. Fact is that disasters affect all parts of the country.
I'm in California. There are those who think our fires and earthquakes are punishment for our wayward lives.

That is why I put the evil demon on my post. I think this is mean stuff, but we in California have to put up with this kind of talk every time a disaster hits us.

31. Of course, I've never said anything about California either.
It's just a common thing on DU to criticize the flyover states, especially if they lean red or are red. People on here forget that there are plenty of progressives still living in those states.

Aren't we supposed to be better than "those people"? Maybe we need to show it instead of making comments that will be taken out of context and posted on other sites.

70. Actually, I also have family in Missouri, and my mother lived in
Oklahoma as a child and has very fond memories of it. I don't look down on any states, but I do look down on people who think that natural disasters are necessarily expressions of the wrath of God. All areas of the US have to deal with natural disasters of one kind or another. As for the wrath of God, if you, like me, believe in God, then you probably agree that we cannot fathom what God is much less what God has to do with natural disasters other than that God is said to have "created" the world.

It's a crazy world, and most of the people in it are the craziest part of the world.

Rest assured, we will have a huge earthquake one of these days, and fingers will be pointed at Californians.

71. Or Missouri will beat you to it.
Some consider New Madrid to be overdue.

Think of it this way: we all know better. There is no reason to make comments like those made all over DU today. If you grew up in this area you know this phrase: "Your momma taught you better."

Well, on DU I like to think that our collective mommas all taught us better. There is no reason for a number of things that have been posted on here today to be posted.

80. Agreed
The comment was made in jest, but I agree...one has to be VERY careful when using humor during a time like this. Best to not even try any humor at all--even humor against politicians we may not like--because it's in poor taste, and reflects badly on DU. :/

Several years ago, wild fires were popping up through-out Oklahoma and Texas due to high winds and drought conditions and a lovely person here on DU made the comment "good". Seven people were killed in those fires, numerous homes and thousands of acres burned. She stills posts here and claims to be a progressive....interesting world here at DU....very progressive.

38. I have no idea
I went to basic training at "Fort lost in the woods", Missouri and we were doing a field training exercise. Drill Sergeants woke us up around 2am to bus us up back to the barracks because of tornado warnings so I guess it happens. Though I never independently confirmed this and a possible tornado in November seemed very odd to me.

I got in trouble for that because I was the squad leader and someone in my squad grabbed the person's weapon he was sleeping next to(and that person grabbed his).

47. No. They do happen later in the day/evening because the end of the day is usually the warmest
and when the sun goes down and it cools off, things start to get crazy.

Tornadoes are nutty though. We're about an hour east of Joplin and 3 years ago we had a January tornado. And usually several times a year we have to take cover in the mornings (I'm a teacher.) Its almost guaranteed that you will hang out in duck and cover several times in May.

59. Their concern for people's safety was so genuine
and their directions were very specific and emphatic.

54. Hail from my house

Apparently, in Piedmont, a man emerged from his cellar to find a horse in his swimming pool. He did not have a horse before...but the horse was fine from what it seems.

That tornado was probably the strongest of the day; at its peak it was at least F4 if not F5. It tracked northeast from Hinton to El Reno to Piedmont to Guthrie, so it barely missed tearing into heavily populated areas. If the track had been just 3 miles further south, the devastation would have been catastrophic.

The tornado passed about 10 miles to the northwest of us. We got marble-sized hail and very strong inflowing winds for a few minutes, but that caused no damage.

68. The clouds rolling in looked like something from a horror flick!
It was unreal! Sirens sounded in NE Oklahoma around 7:45. It is starting to calm down now, but looks like we might get round two in about an hour.

69. It sure is ugly here in Arlington, TX.
Most of the storms seem to be passing southwest to northeast and are north of south Arlington and Mansfield where I live. It is really ugly though. I am from Missouri and have lived in Oklahoma, Kansas and of course Texas. For the life of me I can't figure out why I can't seem to get out of tornado alley, LOL!
