A measure overhauling the state's collective bargaining system is on the verge of being adopted by the Legislature.
Lawmakers gave second-round approval Friday to the measure (LB397), which represents the first comprehensive overhaul of collective bargaining law since 1969.
And Speaker Mike Flood Of Norfolk praised the year-long effort, noting that the plan was hammered out without the tumult that similar efforts saw elsewhere, particularly in Wisconsin and Ohio.
"You know what makes Nebraska different? We didn't have drums beating in the Rotunda. We didn't have thousands of people camped out in tents. We didn't engage in hysteria," Flood said. "We sat across the table. We had heated discussions. We had difference of opinion. We had intelligent citizens of this state -- whether it was labor or management or the business community -- make impassioned speeches based in fact and good-faith efforts to make the right policy happen in Nebraska.

The public unions gave up a lot. But it is better than a ballot imitative by the tea party, Kochs, etc. to end public unions altogether.
