Afghan Guantanamo detainee 'commits suicide'

The inmate was found unconscious while an investigation is under way to determine the exact cause of the death.

An Afghan detainee at the US prison facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba has died in an apparent suicide, the US military said. The prisoner, identified as Inayatullah, a 37-year-old accused of being a member of al-Qaeda, was found dead by guards conducting routine checks at the facility on Wednesday.

"An investigation is under way to determine the exact circumstances of what happened," Navy Commander Tamsen Reese, a spokeswoman at the Guantanamo Bay US naval base, said.

Inayatullah is the eighth prisoner to die at the detention centre since the United States began sending foreign captives with alleged al-Qaeda or Taliban links to Guantanamo Bay in January 2002. Five others died of apparent suicides and two died of natural causes.

Last year, a US federal judge dismissed a complaint by the families of two Guantanamo detainees who claimed their deaths in 2006 had been covered up when the Pentagon ruled them suicides.

1. "to determine the exact cause of the death."
The coroner has been ordered not to take into account the corpse's headless condition when the suicide ruling will be announced later this week.

2. I wouldn't be so quick to judge...
After all, indefinite detention, especially without a trial, doesn't leave a person with much to live for. Suicide doesn't seem that unlikely.

3. Driven to suicide vs killed directly?
> After all, indefinite detention, especially without a trial,
> doesn't leave a person with much to live for.

True. As the OP quote said:
>> Five others died of apparent suicides and two died of natural causes.

"So, do you want to be murdered immediately or murdered over a longer duration?"

6. "apparent suicides" and 'Suicide' with quotes.
I suppose it's impossible to admit that there were any, you know, actual suicides, no qualifications or hedging.

8. You are the one that put them in quotes ... I took them straight from the OP - without rephrasing.
> "apparent suicides" and 'Suicide' with quotes.

Why imply that I was writing anything other than what I did?

My question was not "was it an actual suicide" but rather
"How much difference is there between driving someone to suicide
though endless illegal detention & torture and killing them directly?"

9. The title of the OP:
Afghan Guantanamo Detainee 'Commits Suicide'

Not:
Afghan Guantanamo Detainee Commits Suicide

See the difference?

10. Silly me, presuming that you wanted to discuss what I'd said when you replied to my post ...
... rather than just commenting on the OP itself on a random side-thread
instead of a simple reply to the OP ...

See the difference?

12. The OP title is the same as the linked article headline
just like it's supposed to be.

Are we supposed to edit out disagreeable quotes?

But, yes, I see the difference.

14. Yeah, I know the rules on titles.
I was pointing to bias inherent in the title.

15. Agree. The quotes signify bias, denial of actual suicide
Edited on Fri May-20-11 06:03 PM by JustABozoOnThisBus
But the bias is the fault of Al Jazeera, not the OP.

I see three possibilities (after a glass of wine at dinner):
The suicide is actual, for whatever reason.
The Marines murdered him, made it look like a suicide.
Other inmates murdered him, made it look like a suicide.

The truth may be discovered, though it may not be leaked to the public. I'm sure the military feels that we have no need-to-know, unless it's politically expedient.

edit to add: fourth possibility: natural causes. it happens.

Obama ordered it closed. Congress blocked it.

13. Body will be shipped back to middle east after examination
So much for a quick burial as prescribed by Islam.

No instant burial at sea, just a cold locker in a morgue.
