Wisconsin GOP Rep. Paul Ryan may decide soon on Senate run
11:50 AM, May. 15, 2011 |

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan says he might decide as early as this week whether to run for the Senate to replace retiring Democrat Herb Kohl.

Ryan, of Janesville, is chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee.

Appearing Sunday on CNN’s "State of the Union," Ryan said his family and supporters just started digesting the idea.

Other possible candidates include Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen; former Rep. Mark Neumann, who lost in the Republican gubernatorial primary last year; and a pair of brothers who lead the Wisconsin Legislature and are closely tied to Gov. Scott Walker and his anti-union plan — Scott and Jeff Fitzgerald.

2. Why would he give up his powerful House position for a junior senator seat?
But then again, he is a Republican, so thinking rationally isn't one of his strong suits.

9. Lieberman still ran for his Senate seat while he ran for VP in 2000
It was his back-up employment plan should the Gore ticket not win.

We would have to research whether that option would be open to Ryan, to run for both, but since both seats are in Congress, maybe the answer would be no. I don't know what the State Constitution would allow, but I am thinking at least the Republican party would make him select a single choice between the two seats.

11. Well you don't have to give up your seat when running for Pres/VP but in most states you have to if
you are running for a higher office.

16. Yes he would have to do give up his US. Rep seat. (They do not
have to give up their seats if running in a special election-such as recalls). This 2012 would be a regular election.

17. Easier for the Tea Partiers to win district seats than state-wide
You can carve out a sympathetic district and keep electing extremists who actually represent a small segment of people. However, to run statewide is different. Should be intersting if he tries for the Senate.
