Source: AFP

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake on Saturday hit off the coast of northeastern Japan, still reeling from the massive March 11 quake and tsunami, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 8:35 am (2325 GMT Friday), 59 kilometres (36 miles) northeast of the Pacific coast city of Iwaki at a depth of nearly 38 kilometres, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami warning was issued.

2. I just can't believe they built all those reactors in such an earthquake prone area!
Not too smart and not much foresight.

6. Considering that of all the countries on earth, Japan is the one with
direct experience of the effects of nuclear explosions and radiation, I find it hard to beleive they were willing to take any chnaces at all with nuclear reactors in their country!

9. We're not talking about making bombs here
This is probably the indirect result of the Atoms for Peace program which was promoting nuclear power as a safe way of generating electricity. Of course, there was public opposition to it, but it was sold to poorer, less populated prefectures (especially Fukushima and Fukui) as a way of providing plentiful electricity and promoting local economic development.

11. The American Red Cross alone collected $120 million

for the Japanese relief effort. I started a thread about that several weeks ago but it fell like a rock. The only threads that seem to stay afloat about Japan are the gloom-and-doom stuff.

At any rate, here's a link to the American Red Cross announcement about the donations:
