1. Pray and give money, he'll be back grifting for Christ in a week or two
No, don't complain, I don't buy his brand of Christianity, no matter how much you think I shouldn't be as insulting to him as he has been to so many human beings on this planet, starting with gay folks.

43. I was not offended, however I did want to clear up this phrase:
"...no matter how much you think I shouldn't be as insulting to him..."

have no idea why you thought that.

where did that come from and what is funny about it?

However, I will accept that you were trying to be funny and leave it at that.

37. Nah A long run is not that hard when you head a huge organization,
including awed lackeys who want only to make you comfortable, and you rake in huge sums of money and great adulation. And you play on people"s love of God and fear of burning in hell for all eternity. And the only work you need to do is read the Bible and make up what it means. (I think he's sincere, or at least started that way, but that is a different issue from giving him credit for lasting 60 years.)

But....

I'll give YOU credit for an amazing run!

29. for 26 yrs,
I've had to deal with a father who was/is a creative, distinguished, well respected trial lawyer.

After my latest trial, he finally said, "You are one serious, excellent, and creative attorney and trial lawyer. I applaud you." I never heard such words from him before. In fact, I had to quit his firm because of his constant abuse/demands and his taking credit for my work. This has been a long time coming.

So, when I apply his dealings with me, and look at Billy and Franklin, I see absolutely no similarity. Billy's son is a spoiled, over-paid, hanging on, wannabe. I worked my ass off earning my own respect in a profession.

"Controversy
Discussion of Jews with Nixon
"In 2002, declassified "Richard Nixon tapes" confirmed remarks made by Graham to President Nixon three decades earlier. Captured on the tapes, Graham agreed with Nixon that Jews control the American media, calling it a "stranglehold" during a 1972 conversation with Nixon.<40> Graham also said, "A lot of Jews are great friends of mine. They swarm around me and are friendly to me, because they know that I am friendly to Israel and so forth, but they don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country, and I have no power and no way to handle them." These remarks were characterized as anti-Semitic by Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League<18> and evangelical author Richard Land.<41>

When the tapes were publicly released, Graham stated, "lthough I have no memory of the occasion, I deeply regret comments I apparently made... They do not reflect my views, and I sincerely apologize for any offense caused by the remarks,"<42> and "If it wasn't on tape, I would not have believed it. I guess I was trying to please... I went to a meeting with Jewish leaders and I told them I would crawl to them to ask their forgiveness."<43> According to Newsweek magazine, "he shock of the revelation was magnified because of Graham's longtime support of Israel and his refusal to join in calls for conversion of the Jews."<43>

In 2009, new tapes were released, in which Graham is heard in conversation with Nixon referring to Jews and "the synagogue of Satan." A spokesman for Graham said that Graham has never been an anti-Semite and that the comparison (in accord with the context of the quotation in the Book of Revelation) was directed specifically at those claiming to be Jews, but not observing Jewish law.<44>"

See also http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/17/us/billy-graham-responds-to-lingering-anger-over-1972-remarks-on-jews.html

For an evangelical nowadays, support of Israel is very much in vogue. Refusing to join in calls for conversion of Jews, however, is a bold and risky step.

28. . . . .
well as much as i dislike his brand of old-time religion, i give the man credit for an amazing run. hopefully he'll be ok, if only to keep that cretinous yahoo of a son from taking over the family business.

i met rev. graham in my teens, as his crusade was rolling through my neck of the woods. he seemed pretty genuine and a rather decent sort... given his line of work. he reminded me a lot of my dad's father, which was a good thing to me at any rate. personally met my entire freshman class that turned out (i went to catholic school... go figure) and shook all of our hands. he really seemed to enjoy that part of his job.

i don't wish him ill, or more ill in this case, and hope for a speedy recovery. just hope he can hang around a little longer to slap some sense into his idiot son.

for those on the thread who thought he died, his wife died a few years ago i think, exact date escapes me.

36. Thanks for being a reasonable voice on this thread
There are nuanced differences between the elder Graham and all those other televangelists. Billy Graham went through an evolution of thought that took him to a more antiwar & antiracism stance. If not for his teapartyish son who is spending the rest of his life overreacting for his earlier rebellious years in such a wrongheaded way, I would hope that some of the pretty tasteless comments would not have shown up here. On another thread with pretty much the same OP, one DUer showed a little compassion by saying he/she wouldn't wish pneumonia on anyone. Seems like more ugliness & ignorance came out on this thread than enlightenment & decency. It wasn't pretty.

35. That would be a GREAT moment
It's a pity there isn't someone willing to do it.

The problem lies in the fact that atheists don't believe in an afterlife, treat all religions as mummery, at best, and as such, generally won't refuse to treat a suffering human.

On the other hand, the stories of the day are rife with accounts of "christian" freaks who won't help a suffering person.

I sometimes get a sense that if all the christian hooey turns out to be true, there's gonna be an awful surprise when Jesus-In-Glory says "All you atheists who did the best you could for folks even though you didn't think there was anything to all the hooey? Guess what?! Go to the head of the class!"

I've got a pretty good idea this is how it's gonna play out.

46. A lot of haters on this thread, as usual
Most of whom only "know" (i.e., what they think they know) about BG third or fourth-hand.

I met Billy Graham around 1979. He was genuine and cordial. He had lunch with a small group of us, and I was impressed. He was not wearing a Rolex or an Armani suit, by the way.

Comparisons of him to Jerry Falwell are laughable. Billy was basically the opposite of Falwell.

He did not, as some here imply, get rich from his ministry. His home in NC is pretty much middle class, far from a mansion. He never drew an exorbitant paycheck from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, unlike Falwell, Robertson, and that ilk. He never wanted to start his own TV network.

If you can prove otherwise, show me the evidence. Billy has never been touched by a even a hint of sexual or financial scandal.

He basically remained non-partisan publicly. He visited the White House at the invitation of many Presidents of both parties.

Now his son, Franklin? Yeah, he's pretty much a rightwing tool. I'm sure his dad is disappointed in him.

48. Billy Graham endorsed G.W. Bush in 2000
So that "Graham's a Democrat" crap doesn't cut it. Though the old huckster always claimed to be a "registered Democrat," even back when he practically had to have a nose job because his schnozz spent so much time up Nixon's ass. But if you seriously believe Billy Graham was a Dem, you'd probably also believe a teen-age virgin gave birth to a...well, never mind.

Here's a report on the event, from a Big Ol' Mean Gawdless Atheist blogger...oh sorry! My mistake! It's actually from the Mainstream Baptist blogspot, in a useful article entitled "Billy Graham and the Rise of the Religious Right." A rise which Graham assisted any way he could...but quietly, of course.

Two days before the 2000 election, Graham went a step further and declared his support for a Bush victory. The setting for what can only be called Graham's endorsement of Bush was Jacksonville, Florida, located in a state where the evangelist was wrapping up a three-day crusade and where Bush had staked his electoral prospects...

On Sunday, November 5, Graham met with George and Laura Bush for a private prayer breakfast. The gathering took place after Bush had attended a worship service with prominent Florida evangelicals and before he commenced a whirlwind final tour of the state. Jeb Bush made sure to mention the breakfast on the Sunday morning news show "Face the Nation..."

After the prayer meeting, Graham (accompanied by his son, Franklin) posed with the Bushes for photographs and talked with reporters. "I don't endorse candidates. But I've come as close to it, I guess, now as any time in my life, because I think it is extremely important," said the aging evangelist. . . . "I believe in the integrity of this man," Graham told reporters, insinuating that he had cast his absentee ballot for the Republican candidate. "I'll just let you guess who I voted for," he added, making sure (as he had during the Nixon years) to reiterate his status as a registered Democrat.
