University of California considers flex tuition
Source: Associated Press

(05-09) 07:15 PDT San Francisco, CA (AP) --

The University of California is considering different tuition costs at its 10 campuses.

It means, for example, a UCLA or UC Berkeley student could pay more for an education than those attending schools like UC Riverside.

Proponents of the plan say demand should set flex pricing. But detractors say it's elitist.

1. Berkeley is supposed to be for the best students
not the richest. :grr:

The only upside might be that Merced might finally be able to attract students by competing on price.

2. Also, it's not just the tuition.
It costs a whole lot more to live in Berkeley and LA than it does to live in Riverside.

4. I'm not sure, probably not
but housing is tight in Berkeley. I'm not sure on campus housing is guarranteed for more than a year. I know a couple of years ago some of the dorms had 3 to a room. Students don't usually want to spend all four years in a dorm.

5. What they should consider is true sliding-scale tuition.

6. There is no way it would work
to many variables, to many issues with parental support. What if parents have money to contribute to education but don't want to?
