Libyan woman 'raped by Gaddafi troops' flees to Tunisia
Source: The Guardian

Iman al-Obeidi, the Libyan woman who claimed she was raped by Muammar Gaddafi's soldiers, has reportedly fled to Tunisia with the help of a defecting military officer.

Obeidi, who drew worldwide attention when she burst into a Tripoli hotel to describe to foreign journalists her alleged ordeal at the hands of 15 men, has been given refuge in Tunis by western officials.

Obeidi told CNN she had entered Tunisia with a refugee document and was considering her next move. She claimed her court case against the soldiers – who she said had seized her at a checkpoint near Tripoli – had barely progressed.

After passing numerous checkpoints disguised in a veil that hid her face except one eye, Obeidi passed the Dehebi crossing on Thursday without trouble. Obeidi's story of being brutalised by 15 drunken men over two days – some of whom she claims were close to Gaddafi's inner circle – has become a rallying call for revolution.

1. I'm glad she's alive and out of Libya
I have been worried about her safety since we first heard of her. Hope she's safe now in Tunisia.

Hard to believe that Gaddafi is still around.

3. Update: Eman's family overjoyed to learn the news on TV

Al-Obeidy's mother learned about her daughter's escape after seeing news reports on TV, her father told CNN from the family's hometown of Tobruk, Libya. Atiq Al-Obeidy said that his wife then called him, and both parents were overjoyed.

Atiq Al-Obeidy admitted he was "not optimistic" that his daughter would be able to safely leave Libya, thinking forces loyal to Gadhafi "would do the worst to her, given his past."

"I am extremely delighted, and I will be looking forward to more information about how she was able to escape," the woman's father said.

4. Eman Al-Obeidy, Alleged Rape Victim, Leaves Libya
Source: Huffington Post

"I still do not know what I am going to do," Eman al-Obeidy told CNN in an exclusive interview. But at least now, she has escaped from Libya.

Al-Obeidy made international headlines in March, after she ran into a hotel full of journalists in Tripoli, and told reporters that 15 of Gaddafi's men had beaten and raped her. After she was dragged from the hotel by Libyan officials, journalists pressed for answers as campaigns rose up across the world to "free al-Obeidy."

In an audio interview with Anderson Cooper last month, al-Obeidy described how she was abducted at a government checkpoint and held for days. She said that she was bound, beaten, had alcohol poured over her eyes, and was gang raped repeatedly. She said one of the soldiers sodomized her with his Kalishnikov. A government spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, said the men accused by al-Obeidy planned to sue her.

On Thursday, al-Obeidy fled Libya and crossed into Tunisia with the help of a defecting military officer and his family. According to CNN, al-Obeidy left Tripoli in a military car, hidden under a head cover. Although the car was stopped at various checkpoints, al-Obeidy crossed the Dahibah border disguised "in the local manner" and using a refugee document. European diplomats reportedly escorted her to Tunis.

This wasn't "fantasy fulfilment." She did not want that shit to happen to her. Cosmopolitan is the worst damn magazine on the planet, IMHO.

8. At this time, it's an allegation
Maybe she was raped

Maybe she had an agenda

It needs to be investigated, but who knows if that will ever happen.

Anyway, she's out of Libya.

7. Finally some good news from war-shattered libya
Iman is free. One of the most powerful messages in the recent
weeks for everybody who is with the liberation fighters and
definitively against dictator Khaddafi. She could become a
symbol for that what we call nowadays 'the great rebellion' -
but please remind also: Iman is a brutally raped woman, hurt
and traumatized by beasts. All she deserves is care, mentally,
psychologically and - in my opinion the most important - all
our sympathy for the hell she'd been going through. We should
respect her privacy when she's needing it, we should support
her activities against the terror regime in Tripoli and we
should appreciate her unbroken power.

Perhaps this is - and you can call me an incorrigible optimist
- the turning point for Muammar and his clan: he has lost
against one single woman. These news should be spread all over
the Libyan territory. And perhaps one clan chief after the
other who is still supporting that so called 'leader' will
realize that he is sitting entirely on the wrong side of the
border .. it's always time to change.
