SPANISH golf legend Severiano Ballesteros, who underwent surgery for a brain tumour three years ago, died early today at his home in northern Spain.

Ballesteros, 54, regarded as one of golf's all-time greats, "died this morning in his house in Pedrena (Cantabria)", TVE1 said.

Sky News also reported the former world No.1 had died at his home.

His family had said on his website today that he had suffered a "severe deterioration" of his condition.

Ballesteros - who won five majors, including The Masters twice, during his 30-year professional career - underwent surgery for a brain tumour, followed by a course of chemotherapy, three years ago.

One of golf's greatest and so young.

When he was a kid he could hit a ball further with a Coca Cola bottle than I can with a club.

RIP Seve.

9. He was a neat guy. Brought golf to the masses.
I once golfed a public course he funded for a little resort town called Macuto, in Venezuela. It was built on a mountainside and there was only enough room to put in eight holes, but the locals got to play any time for cheap--less than five bucks, if I recall right.

I lost all six of my golf balls on the first three holes, which is one reason why I have since retired from the sport. I'm pretty sure some of my slices made it all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
