Canadian Catholic Bishop Pleads Guilty To Child Pornography Charge
Source: Huffington Post

TORONTO - A former Roman Catholic bishop in Nova Scotia has pleaded guilty to trying to import child pornography after he was arrested in 2009 returning from a trip to Thailand.

Appearing in an Ottawa court on Wednesday (May 4), Raymond Lahey, 70, pleaded guilty to a single charge of "possession (of child pornography) for the purposes of importation." A second charge of possession is expected to be withdrawn as part of the plea deal.

Lahey is due to return to court on May 26 to set a sentencing date.

Lahey was arrested in September, 2009 at Ottawa's airport after a trip to Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. A check of his laptop computer and other devices revealed more than 500 images of child pornography involving boys.

7. The marriage ban made sense at the time
they didn't want split loyalties (family/church) and they wanted all property to stay with the church rather than be dispersed among offspring via inheritance.

Not really an issue any more. They need to do away with it.

10. I wasn't just talking about priests, though.
The history you mention is familiar to me.

And, back in the day, and even now, they often tolerated something going on between Father and "the parish housekeeper".

11. Yeah they would always relax the rules when convenient
one pope was kicked out for having too many illegitimate kids. By their rules one would have been enough, but they let it go until it became too embarrassing.

I really wish they'd stick to charity work and maybe telling people to be decent towards each other and leave the craziness out of it. Organized religion doesn't have to be a bad thing, it just happens to be 99% of the time.

12. In terms of Christianity, my impression has always been
that the priests(and later, the Protestant ministers)focused on what people do with what Monty Python called "the naughty bits" every time they needed to put working people on the defensive and stop them from rising up against the aristos of the day. It was always about using personal sexual shame to stop threats to the social order.

3. Episcopalians used to be a part of the Catholic Church.
They allow their Priests to marry and be normal people from all walks of life, even Gay if they so choose. I have yet to hear of child molestation by an Episcopalian Priest.

Extremism is the path to destruction, IMO.

8. But the Catholic church virtually encourages it.
Hiding their pedophiles and keeping their code of silence, denying and paying off the abused. At this point child sex abuse is synonymous with Catholicism.

13. the Church of England didn't allow a married priesthood until it had broken with Rome.
And it wasn't really meant to be "Protestant" in the Lutheran or Calvinist senses of the term...it was just meant to be a church that was subservient to the Crown...in some regards, it could be taken to have historical similarities with the Greek and Slavic Orthodox Churches...each of which, while having some larger connection, functioned as a part of the state in which it was located and in some degree of deference to that state.

15. Ken, you are right. It all came
about (so the story goes) when the King was not ranted his eighth divorce in the Catholic church; from Mary Bolin(?). So he kicked the Catholics out and started the "Church of England." Which became the Episcopal Church.

16. Actually, it was Katherine of Aragon
And he'd likely have been given the annulment if it hadn't been for the inconvenient fact that her nephew had the Vatican under military siege at the time.
