Sarkozy: France could recognise Palestine
Source: Al Jazeera

France may recognise a Palestinian state later this year Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said in an interview with a leading weekly magazine.

"If the peace process is still dead in September, France will face up to its responsibilities on the central question of recognition of a Palestinian state," Sarkozy said in an interview with L'Express published on Wednesday.

"The idea that there is still plenty of time is dangerous. Things have to be brought to a conclusion" before a UN gathering in September, he added.

Germany, meanwhile, stressed on Wednesday that it would not recognise a Palestinian state without Israel's acceptance.

3. That's nice. What borders does he plan to recognize?
Has he told the Palestinians what borders he's decided upon?

7. That's the $64K question
If they recognize the state of Palestine, what borders do they recognize? Even the Palestinians can't agree on that.

10. borders
Gaza, the West Bank, a means between them, the Arab quarter of Jerusalem, the illegal Israeli settlements in those areas gone. That's been clear for a long time.

4. Good! It was France who stood tall against W and Tony Blair when
the UN inspectors said there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. (But then as the always ubiquitous when it came to stupidity W famously said 'France doesn't know what the word entrepreneur means.' (paraphrase) W the most ignorant of the US presidents and we all know that takes some doing.)

17. This would be the first UNSC state to recognize the Palestinian state.
And it would be a coup for France.

18. Both France and England may recognize Palestinian state
Both France and England may recognize Palestinian state
Thursday May 05, 2011 10:23 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News

The French and British Prime Ministers both gave interviews Thursday morning that indicated their willingness to recognize a Palestinian state if peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians result in failure. The statements came in the midst of a diplomatic visit to both countries by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

British Prime Minister David Cameron told Netanyahu that unless Israel engages in a real and meaningful peace process with the Palestinians, Britain would consider backing the declaration of a Palestinian state that the Palestinian President plans to make at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Nicholas Sarkozy, the French Prime Minister, spoke to reporters with the French weekly L'Express in advance of a meeting with the Israeli leader. Sarkozy told the reporters that he hoped the peace process would resume over the summer, but added that, “If, conversely, the peace process remains stalled in September, France will take responsibility on the central question of recognizing a Palestinian state.”

Neither the British nor the French Prime Ministers publicly rejected the Palestinian unity government, as requested by Netanyahu, and Nicholas Sarkozy voiced his outright support for the unity deal made between rival Palestinian factions on Wednesday.
